    Job Description Summary

    Based in Belgium, UK or the Netherlands, the Senior Financial Analyst is the key financial manager for Environmental Defense Fund’s work to address climate change in India. Primary responsibilities will include systematically gathering, analyzing, budgeting and reporting on income and expense data for specific funds and programmatic, e.g. Mission, activities. Typically requires 4 years’ experience.

    Overall Function

    The Senior Financial Analyst will help develop, track and analyze budgets and fundraising proposals, will organize and present financial data for reporting and decision-making, and will execute financial processes for a variety of programmatic workstreams. This requires organizing the data, completing financial reports, reviewing grants, contracts and subawards, performing financial analysis and projections, reconciling variances, and identifying and resolving any issues. The Senior Financial Analyst will pursue continuous improvement in forecasting, reporting and processes used to monitor budgets and present complex financial data for decision-making to both financial and non-financial audiences. The role will report to the Director, Mission Finance.

    The Senior Financial Analyst will be a member of the Mission Finance team within the Finance Department, partnering with other Mission Finance staff and staff across Mission areas, operations, and the Finance and Development Departments in Asia, Europe and the US. Working in this matrixed environment, the Senior Financial Analyst will ensure the production of timely, accurate, and insightful financial information for various stakeholders.

    The role is fixed-term contract for two years, which may be renewable. Candidates must have the right to live and work in the EU or UK when applying for this role.

    Key Responsibilities

    Execute financial planning and reporting activities as well as day-to-day financial processes on behalf of assigned Mission funds and workstreams.

    • Produce timely month-end reports of actual vs. budget results, ensuring accuracy and completeness; investigate, analyze, and explain variances from budget for income and expense line items. Update forecasts as needed
    • Prepare and facilitate fundraising proposal budgets and donor financial reports on awarded revenue
    • Execute day-to-day financial procedures, including expense reclasses, invoicing, contract financial review, and ensuring correct coding of expenses
    • Prepare budgets and financial reports for various stakeholders, including Mission staff, internal management, finance staff, and senior operations leads and provide recommendations for utilization of the budget as per the timeline
    • Serve as Manager for one or more grants and funds
    • Identify variances and issues in budget management and work with program staff to correct
    • Submit and/or approve invoices, ensure the proper coding of expense items. Submit purchase orders for management approval.
    • Assist in the development of annual budget submissions
    • Participate in departmental meetings and trainings
    • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
    • Perform additional relevant responsibilities as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting or related field
    • Demonstrated familiarity with GAAP and thorough understanding of non-profit accounting principles and grants management
    • Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience with a Bachelor’s, or an advanced degree with at least 2 years of experience; finance and/or accounting experience in a non-profit organization is strongly preferred along with experience working with grants
    • Reporting experience with government grants, foundations, and private donors is a plus
    • Proven knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting required
    • Ability to perform financial analysis and to create insight from a large-scale general ledger
    • Detail-oriented: the ability to spot trends and ensure accuracy
    • Experienced in MS Office Suite, with expertise in Excel: the ability to develop formulas, pivot tables, charts and spreadsheets that clearly present data to facilitate decision-making by management. Experience with NetSuite or other forecasting/budgeting reporting SAAS is a plus
    • Experience in fund accounting is a plus
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills: the ability to effectively liaise with colleagues, particularly communicating financial information to a broad audience with differing needs
    • Solid organizational and problem-solving skills: the ability to multi-task and be flexible under pressure with changing priorities and perform well in a fast-paced team environment
    • Self-motivated: the ability to work productively and independently as well as collaboratively with a team
    • Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds

    Compensation: (Annual)

    • Belgium: EUR 56,000 - 61,000
    • Netherlands: EUR 50,000 - 60,000
    • UK: GBP 45,000 - 53,000
