Inequality Media with Robert Reich seeks a full-time Deputy Director to support the Executive Director and manage a diverse range of operations, finance, and administrative activities, as well as fundraising for our organization. This role will primarily oversee internal matters, allowing the Executive Director to focus on externally-facing fundraising, partnership and programmatic matters. 

 Salary: $115,000 to $135,000

Location: Berkeley, CA (must be available to come into the office at least two days per week)

Reports to: Executive Director

Co-founded by former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, Inequality Media educates and engages the public about inequality and imbalance of power through the use of digital media. A Berkeley-based non-profit with a core staff of seven, IM employs social media to reach millions of people each week with clear, compelling videos, broadcasts, and posts about what’s happening to our democracy, our culture, and our economy – and what people can do to put America on a path toward a fairer and more just society. Our audience includes over 8 million followers across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, and other platforms, and our videos have been viewed over nearly 100 million times.



About the position: 

Inequality Media seeks a Deputy Director to assist the Executive Director in providing leadership and oversight to the everyday operations of the organization, including Inequality Media Civic Action, a 501(c)4 organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will be part advisor, part administrator, and part project manager, helping to develop and implement strategies to meet our organizational goals. The role will be primarily internal, with some external-facing responsibilities, including but not limited to projects related to operations, administration, finance, compliance, communications, partnership development, digital strategy, research, and fundraising.


The ideal candidate will handle complex situations and multiple responsibilities simultaneously, mixing long-term projects with the urgency of short-term, time-sensitive demands. The Deputy Director must be a proactive self-starter who enjoys working within a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. They must have very strong written and verbal communication, and organizational skills. The ideal candidate will be excited by the opportunity to play a key role in managing a highly effective non-profit organization, and share the staff’s, cofounder’s and board’s belief that economic inequality is a defining social justice issue of our time.


RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to)

Operations/Finance/HR

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director (ED), working closely with the Operations and Finance Associate, to manage all day-to-day aspects of operations, finance and HR for Inequality Media, as well as the affiliated organization, Inequality Media Civic Action. (The two annual budgets for both organizations total around $4m)
  • Assist the ED to create the annual budgets for both 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 entities
  • Improve internal systems with an eye toward future needs and budget realities
  • Serve as liaison between Executive Director (ED) and key partners, funders, donors, and other stakeholders
  • Oversee vendor accounts and contract negotiations with t an extensive network of contractors, including collaborating with the Finance & Operations Associate to oversee the invoicing process, managing the hiring of new contractors, and issuing services agreements
  • Work to solve problems and deal with issues before they bubble up to the ED
  • Manage team meeting agenda creation, notes, and action items / deliverables
  • Collaborate with Operations and Finance Associate in scheduling and carrying out training sessions with team for new software/tools
  • Assist the ED and collaborate with Finance Director on banking, legal, and tax-related tasks
  • Conduct research and draft memos for ED on various research topics 
  • Serve as organizational point of contact for outside inquiries 
  • Provide high level operational and administrative support to ED and manage additional projects as needed
  • Manage onboarding process for new full-time and part-time employees, including benefits and payroll enrollment
  • Monitor the organization’s overall financial health, revenue, and expenses
  • Make strategic resource allocation decisions with the ability to adjust as opportunities and challenges arise
  • Manage financial and legal compliance for 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 entities

Serve as Liaison to Board of Directors

  • Oversee board meeting calendar and organize all logistics for board meetings for both 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations 
  • Maintain and electronically distribute board related documents, e.g. board book, minutes, calendars, conflict of interest documents, etc.
  • Manage communications to board members regarding meetings, events, etc.
  • Ensure minutes are recorded during meetings and distribute to board post-meeting

Support Fundraising and Communications

  • Collaborate with ED to implement fundraising strategies
  • Assist ED to create programmatic and financial reports for high net-worth donors 
  • Set long-term fundraising goals for the organization; oversee organizational fundraising systems and processes, ensuring Inequality Media/Inequality Media Civic Action meets fundraising goals
  • Monitor donor trends and successful campaign efforts in collaboration with Finance & Operations Associate
  • Draft and submit general operating and program-specific grant proposals, and reports, on a timely basis, in collaboration with ED
  • Lead the effective and efficient administration of a complex grants portfolio throughout the entire post-award life cycle ensuring compliance with all grant and contract regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Write and edit internal and external communications related to donors and foundations
  • Cultivate new donor relationships and follow up on contacts made by the ED and support the cultivation of ongoing relationships
  • Oversee timely process for issuing acknowledgement and thank you letters for all donors
  • Oversee annual fall snail mail campaign

REQUIREMENTS

  • Passionate about Inequality Media’s mission and impact
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with both c3 and c4 entities preferred 
  • Strong budgeting experience preferred 

ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Work proactively to support and strengthen the overall stability and effectiveness of the organization
  • Proven track record of excellent follow-through and accountability
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including copy editing skills
  • Knowledge of financial management and strategic planning, but not required
  • Knowledge of human resource policies helpful, but not required
  • Experience managing a principal helpful, but not required
  • Strong organizational and troubleshooting skills
  • Detail-oriented and strong decision-making ability
  • Flexibility and good humor
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small team 
  • The ability to adapt rapidly to evolving priorities and deadlines, and remain calm and focused in the face of pressure
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Google Suite including Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets; Photoshop and Squarespace knowledge a plus
  • Excellent web and technology skills; comfortable troubleshooting tech issues and learning new technical/computer skills as they arise
  • Knowledge of current events, politics, and economics

Compensación

Inequality Media provides 100% of medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage costs for employees.
