Vermont Legal Aid seeks 3-4 full-time Staff Attorneys for our Housing Discrimination Law Project, Poverty Law Project, and Disability Law Project.
The Housing Discrimination Law Project advises and represents clients statewide in asserting their civil rights under the federal Fair Housing Act, bringing cases in state and federal courts, at the Vermont Human Rights Commission, and before HUD. HDLP also regularly submits public comments on planning and zoning that impact fair housing choice, and conducts education, outreach, and training. This position could be located in any office of VLA.
The Poverty Law Project provides legal assistance for the most critical needs of low-income Vermonters. This includes fighting for safe, stable, and affordable housing, and income support from benefits, and advocating for systemic change on behalf of low-income Vermonters through high impact cases and legislative and administrative advocacy. This position will be located in VLA’s Burlington office.
The Disability Law Project engages in individual and systems advocacy in a variety of forums on behalf of people with disabilities. Case work is primarily in the areas of disability-based discrimination, special education, government benefit programs, guardianship, and other areas concerning individual rights. There is a preference for this position to be located in the Springfield or Rutland office of VLA.
General responsibilities: interview prospective clients, assess legal problems, and identify legal advice; individual and systems advocacy in a variety of forums on behalf of clients; conduct factual investigations and analysis; legal research; prepare briefs and argue appeals; become proficient in law handled by the specific law project.

Starting salary is $71,793-$82,061, commensurate with experience. Benefits include four weeks paid vacation and retirement, as well as excellent health benefits. These are bargaining unit positions. Attorney applicants must be licensed to practice law in Vermont, eligible for admission by waiver, or have passed the UBE with a Vermont passing score. In-state travel in a personal vehicle required.
