Senior Attorneys on the Matrimonial Unit are part of a team of lawyers, legal assistants and social workers who represent clients in divorce and separation actions in any of the five boroughs and parts of Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Senior Attorneys handle complex matrimonial matters, review cases handled by other team members to assure competent legal practice and adherence to prescribed practices and procedures, act as a resource and provide training to other attorneys and legal assistants, assist with and coordinate assignment of new cases, telephone advice, intake and court appearances, and review and closes legal files. In the absence of a Supervising Attorney due to vacation or sick leave, Senior Attorneys assume the full responsibility of a Supervising Attorney.
Senior Attorneys participate in AFSCME's defined benefit pension plan (pension benefits vest after five years of service), receive employer paid health, prescription drug, dental, optical and generous paid leave. District Council 37 Municipal Employees Legal Services (MELS) is also deemed an eligible employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
