    Employment Type: Part-Time, Non-exempt

    Schedule: Part-time, includes some evenings/weekends depending on programming needs

    Compensation: $35 per hour, up to 20 hours per week

    Position Overview

    The Ceramics Studio Technician supports the daily operations of the Garcia Center’s Ceramics Studio. This role ensures a safe, organized, and productive environment for members, mentee instructors/program participants, workshop attendees, and visitors. Primary responsibilities include glaze preparation, kiln loading and firing, maintenance of ceramics equipment, member support, and assisting instructors during classes and workshops. The Technician also supports studio cleanliness, inventory management, and general operations to ensure smooth functioning of the ceramics studio for program purposes and membership.

    Key Responsibilities

    Operations & User Support

    • Manage day-to-day operations of the Ceramics Studio, ensuring a positive and productive experience for all users.
    • Provide guidance to members and program participants on clay handling, glazing, studio etiquette, and equipment use.
    • Support workshops, classes, orientations, and public programs by preparing materials, setting up work areas, and assisting instructors.
    • Track incoming/outgoing pieces for workshops and memberships, ensuring proper labeling, shelving, and workflow.
    • Assist with creating ceramic items or studio-produced products for sale in Mercado 536 when needed.

    Glaze, Kiln & Firing Management

    • Mix, test, maintain, and label studio glazes; ensure glazes remain consistent and safe for use.
    • Load, fire, and unload electric or gas kilns according to established firing schedules and protocols.
    • Monitor kiln performance, record firing logs, and report any issues or needed repairs.
    • Maintain and update firing calendars, communicate firing timelines, and ensure the timely return of finished work.

    Equipment & Facility Maintenance

    • Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and readiness checks on ceramics equipment including wheels, slab rollers, extruders, pug mills, and hand tools.
    • Maintain clay inventory, glaze chemicals, kiln shelves, kiln wash, and consumables.
    • Report maintenance or repair needs promptly to the Executive Director.
    • Maintain an organized, clean studio environment including worktables, glazing area, reclaim station, and tool storage.

    Safety & Compliance

    • Enforce studio safety procedures, including safe handling of chemicals, proper use of PPE, tool operation, and kiln safety protocols.
    • Maintain logs for incidents, kiln issues, and safety concerns as needed.
    • Ensure that users follow proper cleanup practices and comply with Garcia Center policies.

    Administrative Support

    • Maintain digital and physical records related to firings, workshop attendance, member activity, and inventory tracking.
    • Assist with updating studio manuals, signage, user guides, and glaze/kiln instructions.
    • Provide photos or content for marketing or social media when assigned.
    • Perform other tasks as needed to support ceramics studio operations and programming.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Knowledge of ceramic processes including handbuilding, wheel throwing, glazing, and kiln operation.
    • Ability to troubleshoot basic ceramics equipment and assist beginner-level users.
    • Strong communication and customer service skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a community-centered creative environment.
    • High attention to safety, detail, and proper equipment use.

    Preferred

    • Experience in ceramics instruction, studio tech work, or community studio settings.
    • Familiarity with electric and/or gas kiln maintenance and firing schedules.
    • Experience supporting workshops, classes, or instructional environments.

    Work Schedule & Environment

    • Part-time schedule determined by program and studio needs.
    • Requires onsite presence in the Ceramics Studio and/or Kiln Room.
    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (heavier items with assistance). Some clay, glaze materials, and kiln furniture may require two-person lifting.
    • Requires extended standing, bending, moving materials, and working in varying temperatures due to kiln operation.
