Development Manager (Remote)

Location: Anywhere within the United States (fully remote)

Reports to: Director of Development

Compensation: $70,000 - $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications

The crisis in local news poses a severe threat to democracy and the health of communities. Rebuild Local News believes that in addition to improved business models and increased philanthropy, public policy plays a crucial role.

Rebuild Local News develops public policies to strengthen local news – and then works on the state and national level to pass effective legislation. Our pathbreaking set of policy initiatives, which we advocate for alongside partners, has helped advance effective, First Amendment-friendly legislation in California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York and Washington. Together, these states have established programs directing more than $316.2 million to local newsrooms. We are working in another dozen states. Rebuild Local News also runs the Rebuild Local News Coalition, which unites newsrooms, labor unions, and civic organizations committed to revitalizing local journalism. Collectively, the groups in the Coalition represent over 3,000 newsrooms and thousands of journalists, working together to safeguard the future of local news.

We aim to dramatically increase public support for local news through laws on the federal and state level that help support civically important news while protecting editorial independence.

We are seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to join our team as the Development Manager. This individual will have a critical role in helping to strengthen the culture of fundraising throughout the organization. They will bring a proactive approach to improving fundraising systems and donor engagement. This position will have the following core responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Development & Management

• Coordinate and manage all grant activities, including applications, reports, and metrics.
• Ensure timely submission of grant proposals and reports.
• Develop and maintain a detailed calendar of grant deadlines and reporting requirements.
• Monitor and track grant progress and deadlines, ensuring deliverables are met.
• Maintain accurate records of all grant activities.
• Develop and implement systems to streamline grant management processes.
• Develop and implement grant management strategies that maximize funding opportunities and organizational impact.
• Assist with cultivating and stewarding relationships with program officers, family foundations, and individuals to strengthen partnerships and identify new funding opportunities.

Donor Prospecting & Research

• Identify and qualify new prospects and develop strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of philanthropic support using research
• Helping prepare memos for cultivation meetings

Database Administration & Donor Services

• Assist with processing donations using EveryAction
• Maintain timely and accurate records of donor engagement, strategy and activity using CRM and moves management system
• Ensure data integrity
• Respond to donor questions and produce acknowledgement letters
• Reconcile donor data with finance on a monthly basis to ensure accurate major gift tracking
• Assisting with other development initiatives and tasks as needed

QUALITIES:

• Demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and fundraising goals
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Demonstrated proficiency within CRM databases, particularly EveryAction, and Google Workspace applications, as well as wealth screening tools like DonorSearch, iWave, and WealthEngine
• Problem solver, willing to learn and grow with the position
• Collaborative team player who works well with others to achieve shared goals
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, ability to meet deadlines
• Comfortable working independently on a fully remote team
• Willingness to travel as necessary for conferences or events

EXPERIENCE:

• At least 3 years of experience with development operations work
• Minimum 5+ years of experience in nonprofit/public sector, preferably with journalism or public policy organizations
