    Position Summary

    The Work Skills Coach (DSP) plays a critical role in supporting young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities in a community-based retail training program. This position focuses on teaching vocational, social, and daily living skills to help participants achieve greater independence and employment readiness.

    The Work Skills Coach provides person-centered support in alignment with each participant’s individualized goals, OPWDD Life Plan, and Staff Action Plan. This role emphasizes skill-building, positive behavioral supports, and inclusion in a real-world work environment.

    Work Schedule

    20–25 hours per week

    Monday–Thursday, 9:30 AM – 2:00 PM

    • Key Responsibilities
      • Provide direct support, instruction, and positive reinforcement to program participants
      • Teach and model workplace skills including communication, teamwork, time management, and customer service
      • Support participants in learning retail operations and job readiness skills in a hands-on environment
      • Implement individualized goals in accordance with each participant’s Life Plan and Staff Action Plan
      • Promote independence, self-advocacy, and confidence through person-centered approaches
      • Support social, emotional, and behavioral development using appropriate strategies and interventions
      • Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
      • Observe, document, and track participant progress in accordance with program and Medicaid requirements
      • Utilize approved assessment tools to evaluate skill development and outcomes
      • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and families to ensure consistent support
      • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all participants at all times
      • Participate in staff meetings and ongoing trainings as required
      • Assist with retail operations, including customer interactions, merchandising, and cash handling
      • Perform other related duties as assigned to support program success

    Compliance Responsibilities

      • Follow all policies and procedures in accordance with OPWDD and agency standards
      • Deliver services in compliance with Medicaid-funded Self-Direction guidelines, as applicable
      • Maintain accurate and timely documentation to support service delivery and billing
      • Complete and maintain all required trainings (e.g., Mandated Reporter, safety trainings)
      • Adhere to confidentiality standards in accordance with HIPAA
      • Report incidents, concerns, and changes in participant status in accordance with OPWDD guidelines
      • Promote and protect the rights of individuals receiving services

    Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in direct support, education, social work, vocational training, or related field
      • Experience working with individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities preferred
      • Strong understanding of person-centered practices and inclusive employment principles
      • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
      • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
      • Strong attention to detail, especially with documentation and cash handling
      • Ability to multitask and adapt in a dynamic environment
      • Basic computer and technology skills required
      • Fluency in English required

    Additional Requirements

      • Must be authorized to work in the United States
      • Must successfully complete all required background checks
      • Ability to travel locally, if required
      • Valid driver’s license preferred

    Compensation

      • Hourly rate: $20–$25 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications
      • This is a part-time position; benefits eligibility will be discussed during the hiring process

      • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in a retail and training environment
      • Ability to move throughout program, retail, and office spaces
      • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally
      • Ability to use a computer, phone, and point-of-sale system
      • Ability to observe and respond to participant needs in real time
      • Ability to assist with event setup, including moving tables, chairs, and displays
