    • Clean Air Council has offices in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Wilmington, and staff members work flexible hybrid schedules as their role and team needs allow. This position requires occasional in-office time as well as periodic work at events and meetings across the region.

    About Clean Air Council:

Clean Air Council is dedicated to protecting and defending everyone’s right to a healthy environment and a livable climate. The Council uses advocacy campaigns, community organizing, strategic communications, public education, and legal action to carry out this mission. Clean Air Council is one of the Mid-Atlantic’s oldest environmental groups. Since its founding nearly 60 years ago, the Council has established itself as an organization that advocates fiercely, strategically, and pragmatically to defend our communities and stabilize our climate. Recent victories include blocking fossil fuel projects slated to emit megatons of greenhouse gases, winning system-saving funding for public transit, and setting new legal precedent to support environmental victories in court.

The Council is an equal opportunity employer and has a strongly held belief in the importance of having a diverse workforce.

    Position Description

The Council seeks a dedicated, motivated, and experienced community advocate who desires to make a difference in community resiliency and air quality in the Ohio River Valley region. The Advocacy Coordinator runs campaigns to block or reduce the harm from polluting industrial facilities. This is an exciting and dynamic position providing critical regional capacity to the climate movement.

    Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate the Council’s advocacy work on petrochemical facilities, including facilitating meetings with partners, canvassing, hosting educational events, and other community organizing tasks
    • Educate the public, including residents, local officials and local groups, about the health and environmental impacts of existing and proposed industrial facilities
    • Teach residents how to recognize potential pollution incidents and report them to the appropriate agencies
    • Organize and support residents in speaking in public meetings and submitting public comments addressing pollution concerns from local industrial sources
    • Support additional environmental organizing campaigns in Southwestern PA
    • Work with residents and coalition partners to develop a long-term positive vision for the region
    • Represent the Council externally at a variety of events and meetings, including funders and the media as needed
    • Some occasional evening and weekends

    Ideal Competencies, Skills, and Experience:

    • Previous experience in community outreach, community organizing, teaching, or work that required similar skills
    • Strong communications and people skills
    • Reliability and dedication
    • Good working knowledge of environmental issues and concerns in the local community
    • Excited about hands-on work at the community level
    • At least two years of experience in environmental advocacy preferred
    • Public speaking experience a plus
    • The Council will prioritize candidates that live in Southwestern PA. Some local travel may be required
    • If you are strong in some of the ideal experience and skills listed above but not all, we still encourage you to apply. We value unique perspectives gained from different backgrounds and experiences and are dedicated to supporting our staff’s professional growth. We look forward to reviewing your application and seeing what you can bring to our team.

Salary: The salary range is $45,000 to $55,000, commensurate with experience.
