Organization: King’s Chapel
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Compensation: Competitive Salary $80-$100K + Exceptional Retirement Benefits
Position Summary
Since 1686, King’s Chapel has stood at the intersection of old and new. King’s Chapel is a vibrant, welcoming congregation as well as a landmark on Boston’s Freedom Trail. We blend a rich history with a progressive, searching faith. We are guided by our covenant: “In the love of truth and in the spirit of Jesus Christ, we unite for the worship of God and the service of all.”
We are seeking a Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) to serve as the operational engine of our mission. This is more than an administrative role: it is also a leadership position designed for a strategic thinker who finds joy in ensuring that the resources, historic facilities, and talented staff and members of King’s Chapel are empowered to thrive. If you are a financial and managerial professional driven by community building, social impact, and historic preservation, we invite you to help us write the next chapter of our story.
Position Impact & Scope
The DFO is a core member of the leadership team, reporting directly to the Senior Minister. You will oversee a $2M annual budget and manage essential operations of the organization—from high-level financial strategy and fund accounting to the stewardship of our historic properties and the support of our worship services, music and history programs, and our Memorial to Enslaved Persons.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Stewardship
- Fiscal Leadership: Direct all financial planning, including the $2M annual budget, cash flow forecasting, and long-term financial modeling.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare GAAP-compliant monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the Vestry (Board) and Treasurer.
- Fund Accounting: Oversee accounts payable/receivable (AP/AR), payroll, and general ledger activities in coordination with external bookkeepers.
- Grant Management: Support fundraising efforts through diligent tracking of restricted funds and grant compliance.
Operational & Facilities Excellence
- Infrastructure Management: Optimize internal processes and policies to ensure organizational efficiency.
- Historic Site Oversight: Work with the Building and Grounds Committee in overseeing the Property Manager in the routine maintenance and capital improvement projects for our historic church building and Parish House.
- Revenue Generation: Oversee the use of church property for functions, events, and rentals to support the organization’s sustainability.
Human Resources & Team Leadership
- Talent Management: Oversee HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, benefits administration, and performance for reporting staff. Foster an inclusive, supportive work environment.
- Supervision and Collaboration: Provide direct leadership and mentorship to the Worship Coordinator and Property Manager. Provide administrative support to the Senior Minister, lay church leadership, and committee chairs, and collaborate with the Music Director, the History Program Director, and Director of our Living Memorial. Schedule and manage part-time staff as needed, e.g., to provide coverage for worship services, concerts and other events.
IT, Risk & Legal Oversight
- Systems Management: Supervise IT infrastructure, software upgrades (QuickBooks, databases), and vendor relationships.
- Risk Mitigation: Manage compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, and coordinate work on insurance and legal issues.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
- Experience: 3–5 years of progressive leadership, preferably in non-profit operations or church administration.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in QuickBooks, Excel (data analysis), and cloud-based collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Zoom).
- Expertise: Deep understanding of non-profit GAAP, fund accounting, and internal controls.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build community and coordinate lay leaders and volunteers.
Work Environment & Benefits
- Location: Administrative offices at 64 Beacon Street, in Boston’s charming, public-transit friendly Beacon Hill neighborhood.
- Schedule: Salaried full-time (40 hours/week). As this role is central to our daily operations, an in-person presence is required, plus an occasional evening or weekend.
- Exceptional Benefits: Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Disability insurance.
- Generous Retirement: Employer contributions up to 10% of salary.
- Paid Time Off (PTO) and some professional development support.
- Optional: A unique opportunity for an on-site apartment with a salary adjustment may be discussed.
