Housing Unit Staff Attorneys are part of a team of lawyers, social workers and legal assistants who represent clients facing eviction from their homes in any of the five boroughs and parts of Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties. Attorneys are assigned to practice in a particular county or counties.
Staff attorneys have direct responsibility for all legal components of cases, from the initial intake to the conclusion of the matter. Staff Attorneys are expected to become proficient in Landlord-Tenant practice and work under the direction of a Supervising Attorney.
Staff Attorneys participate in AFSCME's defined benefit pension plan (pension benefits vest after five years), receive employer paid health, prescription drug, dental, optical and generous paid leave.
D.C. 37 Municipal Employees Legal Services (MELS) is deemed an eligible employer for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
