    About Us

    The Petey Greene Program supports the academic and career goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality tutoring and other educational programs while serving to educate our volunteers and the public on the manifest injustice in our carceral system.

    We envision a world in which all people directly impacted by the criminal legal system have access to high-quality educational programming. The Petey Greene Program will inspire our alumni to become advocates and leaders in transforming the criminal legal system.

    The PGP operates the largest multi-state volunteer tutoring program for currently and formerly incarcerated people. Since its founding, the PGP has tutored nearly 20,000 students at over 148 tutoring sites, including both correctional facilities and reentry programs. We've trained and placed more than 4,000 unique volunteers and recruited from more than 40 partner universities in seven states and the District of Columbia.

    The PGP is headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, but the majority of our 30 employees work in a hybrid arrangement in their respective regions.

    The Opportunity

    As the Petey Greene Program continues implementation of an ambitious strategic plan that will guide our work from through 2028, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a vital role in overseeing and further developing the organization’s finance, compliance, and administrative functions, ultimately supporting the PGP’s growth and sustainability during an exciting time of organizational expansion.

    The CFO will serve as a key member of the executive team, responsible for ensuring the financial health, administrative stability, and operational efficiency of the organization. This role combines strategic leadership in financial planning with hands-on development and management of systems, procedures, and vendor relationships. The CFO will lead all financial operations including budgeting, accounting, cash management, grant reporting, and compliance. This is both a strategic and hands-on role, with oversight of outsourced accounting partners and active collaboration with board committees and staff. The CFO reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

    The position is remote-eligible, with a preference for candidates able to work from or travel to the Princeton, NJ office.

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Leadership

    • Lead the development and execution of PGP’s financial strategy, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
    • Oversee outsourced and/or internal bookkeeping and accounting teams.
    • Manage organizational banking relationships as needed.
    • Create and present comprehensive budget narratives and variance analyses to the board of directors.
    • Present financial statements and budget narratives to the board of trustees; respond to finance-related trustee inquiries.
    • Lead annual financial audits and coordinate IRS 990.
    • Monitor grant-specific accounting, including restricted/unrestricted fund tracking
    • Collaborate with programming staff to track, prepare and send invoices related to PGP’s fee for service programming
    • Monitor accounts receivable and accounts payable, following up as needed to secure payment or communicate updates with vendors
    • Coordinate with PGP staff to review and correct classification of expenses and revenue
    • Maintain and improve financial policies and procedures, including expense reimbursements and internal controls.
    • Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports as well as regular cash flow projections for executive and board review.
    • Establish, monitor, and update financial controls, accounting policies, and internal procedures.
    • Oversee restricted grant tracking, allocation of funds, and funder reporting requirements.
    • Prepare other financial and grant reports as needed

    Administrative Oversight

    • Maintain and manage organizational contracts, vendor agreements, and regulatory filings.
    • Ensure all corporate documents, charitable registrations, and local licensing and registrations are current and compliant in relevant jurisdictions.
    • Oversee and refine internal operating procedures to enhance organizational efficiency.
    • Manage vendor relationships and negotiate service agreements with key contractors.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations and nonprofit standards.
    • Manage risk assessments and support organizational insurance and compliance needs.
    • Maintain up-to-date financial documentation and ensure audit-readiness at all times.
    • Oversee accounting and HR partners and staff for management of taxes and insurance, payroll processing and allocation, monthly reconciliations, processing and paying invoices, etc.

    Organizational Leadership

    • Serve as a financial thought partner to the CEO and executive team, providing strategic analysis to inform decision-making.
    • Collaborate with program and development staff to report on and align programmatic priorities with financial resources.
    • Provide guidance and training to staff on budgeting, expense reporting, organizational financial tools, and financial literacy.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related field.
    • 8-10 years of experience with financial management in the nonprofit sector, including experience in a senior and/or managerial role
    • Expertise in nonprofit accounting (including restricted funds and both cash- and accrual-based systems)
    • Ability and willingness to operate both big picture and strategically, as well as in the weeds when necessary
    • Experience with administering complex grants and grant reporting
    • Experience managing and supporting remote teams
    • Experience developing and scaling operational infrastructure
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
    • Exceptional leadership and management skills
    • Effective communication and negotiation skills
    • Tech-savvy with proficiency in financial, payroll, and CRM systems
    • A commitment to social justice, racial equity, and the rights of currently and formerly incarcerated people

    Preferred:

    • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MPA) or CPA.
    • Strong communication skills and ability to present financial information to non-financial audiences
    • Commitment to continuous improvement, efficiency, and staff collaboration.
