 Job Posting: Youth and Schools Gun Violence Prevention Organizer

About the Organization:

End Gun Violence Michigan is a coalition of 47 faith, community, teacher, student and parent organizations working to prevent gun violence in our state. We formed in the aftermath of the Oxford High School shooting with the goal of building an advocacy coalition with enough power to beat the gun industry. We were instrumental in the campaigns that resulted in the passage of Michigan’s first new gun laws in forty years: extreme risk protection orders (ERPO), safe storage requirements, universal background checks, and stronger protections for domestic violence survivors. We us the tools of public education and mobilization, grassroots organizing, earned media, and advocacy to win change.

Our current goals are to: 1) Ensure that the laws passed in the last session are effectively and equitably implemented; 2) Win state funding for gun violence prevention programs; 3) Pass additional gun violence prevention laws in our state.

We believe in community and survivor leadership, bold action, building power, and never giving up.

EGVMI is currently a fiscally sponsored project of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, though we have applied for independent 501c(3) status.

About the Position:

The Youth and Schools Gun Violence Prevention Organizer will have a key role to play in our work to implement Michigan’s new gun laws.

Schools are a key site for the implementation of the new gun safety laws, particularly safe storage. Our goal is to recruit a number of schools and districts to take part in school safety programming. This programming includes training for educators, gun lock distribution, education for students and parents about the new gun safety laws, and model policies for school safety planning and ERPO use.

The Organizer will work to recruit students, parents and teachers to take part in advocacy work in a few key districts in Metro-Detroit. The Organizer will train these participants in gun safety issues and leadership. The organizer will then facilitate their creation of an advocacy plan and support their engagement with relevant school leaders.

The organizer will also work to coordinate work among various coalition partners.

Qualification & Attributes:

Required:

2-4 years of previous experience in advocacy, organizing, or education;

Ability to work independently in a remote environment;

Proficiency with common productivity software, such as Zoom, Google Docs, and Gmail;

Preferred:

Familiarity with education and/or gun violence issues;

Proficiency with EveryAction/Bonterra;

Existing relationships with political, advocacy or educational leaders in Metro-Detroit.

Working Conditions:

This is a remote position, which will require occasional travel (2-4 times per month) for in-person meetings locally.

The position requires that the applicant be able to work remotely, with reliable access to broadband internet and cell phone connections, as well as their own equipment.

This position will require in the range of 20-40 hours of work per week, depending on the week.

Position Disposition:

The position will start as a contract (1099) position, and will be managed as such. Once EGVMI finalizes our independent 501c(3) status, we will evaluate all positions for restructuring as employees.

The position is grant-funded for 1 year, with the possibility (though not guarantee) of renewal depending on performance and funding.

The position reports to the Executive Director or the Lead Organizer.
