About SpEducational
SpEducational is California’s only nonprofit exclusively focused on parent-led organizing at the intersection of disability and PreK–12 education. We are a small but mighty organization that organizes low-income BIPOC families of students with disabilities to build collective power, advocate for their children’s rights, and drive systemic change in special education. Founded by bilingual community organizer and IEP advocate Lisa Mosko Barros, SpEducational has mobilized 500+ families across LA County and helped to secure landmark legislative wins including SB 445.

Engagement Overview
SpEducational is seeking a bilingual, mission-driven freelance Program Associate to support our Executive Director across a defined set of projects. This is an independent contractor engagement — approximately 20 hours/week — with work structured into discrete project scopes, hourly billing, and monthly invoicing.
The contractor will provide project-based support across our active grants, enabling our Executive Director to focus on facilitation, relationships, policy expertise, and strategic leadership. You will control your own schedule and working methods — we care about deliverables, not hours logged. This engagement is ideal for someone who is deeply organized, bilingual, cares about disability justice and BIPOC families, and finds meaning in making sure a movement stays on track.
Project Scopes:
Parent Leader Coordination (outreach, recruiting)
Programmatic Support (research materials, scheduling, coordination, supporting role during parent leader meetings)
Campaign Support (provide logistical support for parent leader campaign meetings and actions)
Survey Data & Toolkit Distribution Support (help identify targets to distribute to)
Communication (support executive director in communications across multiple channels)
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail — you build systems and checklists instinctively
- Proactive: you anticipate what’s needed and act before being asked
- Mission-aligned: you genuinely care about disability justice, BIPOC communities, and educational equity
- Bilingual in Spanish and English (strongly preferred — our base is majority Spanish-speaking)
- Comfortable with virtual collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Zoom, project management tools)
- Able to hold multiple work-streams simultaneously without losing track of details
- Collaborative and community-centered: you find meaning in supporting and amplifying the work
- Experience in a nonprofit, community organizing, or educational setting is a plus
