Justicia Lab, a program of Scale Justice, builds technology and community-driven tools that help immigrants and low-wage workers access justice. Its flagship project, Reclamo AI, is a multilingual, mobile-first AI assistant that helps workers, especially women, understand their workplace rights, document violations, and take action to recover stolen wages.

Built with legal aid partners, Reclamo AI cuts the time to start a wage claim from days to minutes. We are scaling Reclamo AI from a proven New York pilot to multi-state and, ultimately, national infrastructure for wage justice.

About the role

We want a future where workers can assert their rights as easily as they order a product online. The Senior Full Stack Developer will build that future.

You will rapidly prototype, build, and ship new versions of Reclamo AI, guided by the KPIs and OKRs that define our success. You will own features end to end, from AI pipelines to the screens workers tap on their phones. You will report to the Chief Technology Officer and collaborate closely with the Chief Innovation Officer and our growing product, data, and legal engineering team.

This is a role for a go-getter who thinks outside the box. You will have real ownership and a direct line from your code to workers recovering their pay.

This is a grant-funded position with an initial term of approximately three years. We intend to pursue continued funding, though continuation beyond the grant period cannot be guaranteed.

What you'll do

• Build and iterate fast
  • Prototype, build, and ship new features and versions of Reclamo AI in short cycles.
  • Turn KPIs and OKRs into a build plan, implement features to measure them, and use the results to decide what to build next.
  • Run experiments and A/B tests to improve outcomes such as completed intakes, claims filed, and referrals accepted.
• AI and machine learning
  • Develop and improve Reclamo AI's retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline and its legal knowledge base.
  • Build function-calling and agent workflows that help workers prepare NYS Department of Labor complaints, small claims filings, and referrals to legal partners.
  • Improve AI quality with the Legal Engineer, using evaluation rubrics, test sets, and safeguards for accuracy, bias, and privacy.
  • Track and manage model performance, cost, and latency as usage grows.
• Full stack and channels
  • Build and maintain the web app, along with WhatsApp, SMS, and voice channels.
  • Design APIs, data models, and integrations with legal partners and case management systems.
  • Deliver a fast, multilingual, mobile-first experience for users on low-cost phones and slow connections.
• Scale, security, and reliability
  • Scale the cloud infrastructure behind Reclamo AI as it expands to new states and tens of thousands of users.
  • Protect sensitive user data and follow security and privacy practices, including monitoring and incident response.
  • Work with the Data Engineer on analytics and outcomes reporting, and document your work so others can build on it.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Required (if you meet most but not all, we still encourage you to apply)

• At least 5 years of professional full stack development experience, with products shipped to real users.
• Strong skills in a modern web stack, such as Python or TypeScript/Node.js on the back end and React or a similar framework on the front end.
• Hands-on experience building production applications with large language models, including RAG, prompt design, and function calling or tool use.
• Experience with cloud platforms, APIs, databases, and deploying and monitoring production systems.
• A track record of moving from idea to working prototype quickly, then improving it based on data and user feedback.
• Comfort setting priorities against goals and metrics, and working with a high degree of ownership.
• A commitment to building technology that serves low-wage and immigrant workers and increases access to justice.

Preferred

• Experience with vector databases, LLM evaluation methods, or AI safety and bias testing.
• Experience building for WhatsApp, SMS, or voice interfaces.
• Experience with multilingual products. Spanish fluency is a plus.
• Experience handling sensitive personal data and meeting security and privacy standards.
• Experience with guided interview development and report writing.
• Experience at a startup, nonprofit, legal tech, or civic tech organization.

Location: Flexible within the United States. While this is a remote position, candidates in the New York City area are preferred due to periodic in-person coworking and team collaboration sessions. Remote candidates are encouraged to apply.
