    Founded in 2022, the San Francisco Literacy Coalition (SFLC), a project of the San Francisco Education Fund, partners with literacy focused reading and writing supplemental programs operating within SFUSD schools. We work directly with schools and program partners to create equitable access to quality literacy supports and interventions for PK-5th graders. The SFLC was launched by local CBO partners to align with the district’s ELA priorities, and support efforts within schools to improve literacy rates for all students. The SFLC is working within a subset of schools where a majority of their student population come from historically marginalized communities and are not meeting literacy milestones.

    In 2024 the San Francisco Literacy Coalition was awarded a three year operating grant in order to both broaden and deepen our impact in SFUSD. A critical role to this effort is that of the SFLC Manager, who works in collaboration with schools to manage the coordination and implementation of literacy providers so that students struggling to meet grade level standards are receiving the right interventions to be able to read and write at grade level.

    This position reports to the Director of the SFLC. The Manager will manage the various relationships within their assigned focal schools, work with those schools to conduct regular data reflections to track and adjust the efficacy of the services provided. The Manager will work with school leadership to ensure that school ELA priorities are being met by the SFLC providers. The Manager will be the primary coordinator of the school-based literacy efforts which will likely have different approaches across different schools, based on school needs. The Manager will be deeply embedded within the schools and should be positioned and act as a vital literacy resource to the school community.

    This role is an evolving position that requires adaptation to individual school needs. As a result the focal school partnership and work is emerging. This role requires an optimistic, creative leader with a continuous learning mindset who is eager to build systems to support school literacy needs.

    ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Focal School Support and Program Coordination

    The Manager:

    • Is assigned to 4 to 6 focal schools and is responsible for managing the relationships between those schools and their literacy program partners. In addition they are an active contributor to:
      • monitoring student progress
      • identifying areas of need or trends across grades and programs
      • supporting the school with coordination and management of the literacy programs
      • designing and implementing special projects as needed at each site
    • Cultivates positive and responsive working relationships with school teams (instructional coaches, teachers, principals, community school managers, etc) and with SFLC partner programs in order to foster a sense of collaboration.
    • Works with the Director and co-Manager to monitor progress of the SFLC’s 2028 strategic plan
    • Helps identify new focal school and program partners for the SFLC

    Broader Coalition Based Activities

    • Serve as an effective, highly regarded representative for the SFLC to partners and stakeholders.
    • Learn the different SFLC programs and their approaches in order to support effectively aligning programs to ELA curricula and to understand each programs’ unique evaluation metrics.
    • Conduct regular professional development sessions, focused on the science of reading for stakeholders within and outside of the broader coalition.
    • Report to the Director and the SFLC Advisory Committee regarding school based trends and issues within their focal schools and help the greater SFLC community to understand best practices related to literacy and improving student achievement.
    • Build trust-based relationships with diverse organizations and stakeholders through authentic listening and communication. Encourage feedback to contribute to the improvement of the SFLC’s learning programs and strategy.
    • Contribute to other special projects and priorities that advance the organization’s mission.

    SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

    The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the SFLC’s vision and mission; ability to operate and bring structure in ambiguous and uncertain environments; enjoys coordination, cross functional teamwork and collaboration and thrives as an independent and responsible contributor.

    • 4-8 years experience in literacy based program delivery and/or design, preferably within a nonprofit, education organization, school or school district.
    • Background in education with experience in and a strong understanding of best practices in literacy education and the science of reading.
    • Familiarity with the San Francisco education landscape is a plus.
    • Creative and adaptable performer who can be responsible for multiple priorities at once, who can play a critical school based role as a literacy support professional.
    • Strong data skills with an ability to do thorough data review processes with educators and other stakeholders in order to elevate and identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
    • Highly effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, build trust and maintain effective relationships with external and internal stakeholders at multiple levels.
    • Excellent project management and presentation skills.
    • Track record of successful lateral management/influence of differing stakeholders.
    • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, and a track record of persistent and independent follow ups with the ability to articulate complex ideas and concepts to diverse audiences.
