The Courtney Loprest Award is a $10,000 award given each year to an individual working on eradicating poverty in their community or on a national level.
The Bergel Institute is proud to present the Courtney Loprest Award, named in honor of Hugh Courtney and Pam Loprest, who have been instrumental in the growth of poverty work in the United States for more than 25 years. It is their support and encouragement that led to the founding of the Bergel Institute and that will inspire our work for decades to come.
Hugh and Pam received their Ph.D.’s in Economics from MIT, and both received National Science Foundation scholarships to pursue their doctoral studies. Both have not only achieved the highest level of academic and career success; they have done so with an unequaled modesty and encouragement for others. Hugh and Pam provide both the critical support and the gentle pushes in the back when either are needed. As mentors and leaders, they listen to every idea and offer the perfect combination of critique, encouragement, and support.
