Full-Time Community Organizer
About the Organization
The CA Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative (CHNSC) is a statewide organization whose mission is to mobilize the nail salon workforce to transform the health, safety, and working conditions of the nail salon industry to build a healthy, sustainable, and equitable community. CHNSC educates and builds power in the nail salon community through: leadership development, outreach and education, policy advocacy, civic engagement, communications and narrative change, and research.

Position Overview
The Community Organizer reports to the Program and Organizing Director, and works closely with CHNSC organizers and staff at our Oakland and Garden Grove offices. The position is responsible for organizing low-income immigrant and refugee nail salon workers and owners, including outreach, training, and leadership development to participate in civic engagement, policy advocacy, and community-based research.
Responsibilities
The following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. - Organizing and Leadership Development (85%):
- Conduct community outreach and recruitment for base-building and campaigns
- Ensure member participation in various leadership development, campaigns, and program activities
- Lead and support trainings and meetings on issues impacting the nail salon workforce, including health and safety, workers’ rights, community development, and racial justice
- Contribute to culturally relevant and accessible curriculum and messaging towards leadership development
- Support members and leaders to develop organizing skills and leadership, including public speaking, media messaging, phone banking/canvassing, outreach, etc.
- Support members and leaders to increase political consciousness and awareness of social justice issues, including workers’ rights, racial justice, environmental justice, and reproductive justice
- Interpret and translate activities and materials
- Coordinate logistics for in-person and virtual trainings and events
- Support legislative or campaign related research as needed
- Movement and relationship building with ally organizations and coalitions
- Organizational Development (15%):
- Contribute to overall organizational coordination and planning processes, including organizational strategic planning, team work plan, and staff meetings
- Support various areas of organizational work, events, or campaigns as identified and participate in committees and teams as needed
- Manage volunteers, fellows, and interns as needed
Required Qualifications
- At least three to five years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated commitment to CHNSC’s mission and commitment to social justice values, including gender justice, environmental justice, reproductive justice, racial justice, immigrant and refugee rights, and workers’ rights
- Experience with research, word processing, spreadsheet software, and database programs
- Bilingual and bicultural Vietnamese background
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated oral and written communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to convey information in a clear, concise way
- Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems
- Proven skills at working in a collective environment, including leadership and interpersonal skills to interact sensitively with colleagues and community members from diverse social, cultural, and educational backgrounds
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines, take proactive initiative, and work independently and in a team environment
Compensation
This position is a full-time, non-exempt position. The estimated salary range is $33.80 - $36.06 per hour depending on experience. We offer a competitive health benefits package that includes: medical, dental, vision, and a generous paid time off schedule.
Work Environment
Able to work out of Garden Grove, CA; Flexible hybrid work schedule. This position requires frequent travel within Southern California.
Physical Demands
Able to work on a computer, including sitting at a desk for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation; Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard; Able to see or read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; Able to speak clearly and in audible tones on the phone and in-person and be understood by others; Able to hear and understand speech, including on the phone; Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Able to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds; Must be able to stretch, bend, kneel, twist, squat, reach above or below the shoulder, push, and grasp; Able to facilitate and present materials to groups of individuals.
