About Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County:

Founded in 2001, the Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County (HLC) was created when nonprofit leaders and service providers came together to confront the housing crisis and the deeply entrenched obstacles to affordable housing development across the county. Today, HLC is a membership organization that works with partners to preserve and expand the range and supply of adequate, accessible, and affordable housing for residents and workers throughout San Mateo County. We organize to ensure that everyone who works here, lives here, or grows up here can obtain a suitable home.

Our Mission: Housing Leadership Council works with communities and their leaders to create and preserve quality affordable homes.

Our Vision: A San Mateo County that works together to build inclusive, equitable, and healthy communities where all people can access safe, affordable homes and the resources needed for their families to thrive.

We pursue this vision by developing housing champions, communicating clearly through strategic campaigns, working in broad coalitions at the local, regional, state, and federal level, and building a resilient, diverse, and inclusive organization.

    Position Overview:

The rising cost of living and the shortage of quality affordable homes is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Do you want to build a career where you can make a real difference in your community? Would you like to join a diverse, mission-driven team working to make San Mateo County a more affordable place to live? Campaigns include finding policy solutions to displacement pressures in San Mateo and building political power to protect 40 approved affordable senior farmworker homes in Half Moon Bay.

HLC is seeking a Senior Organizer to lead leadership development, community outreach, and resident engagement efforts that ensure more community members can access quality affordable homes. This position will work closely with community members, coalition partners (including Our Home San Mateo and ALAS — Ayudando Latinos A Soñar), and volunteers to build and sustain support for affordable homes throughout San Mateo County.

We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented backgrounds and multilingual applicants to apply.

This is where YOU come in. Here’s what you’ll bring:

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Coordinate and support community events, workshops, and presentations
    • Enter data and maintain the organizing database
    • Assist with scheduling meetings, coordinating logistics, and facilitating communication with partners and supporters
    • Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications:

    • Conversational Spanish
    • Eagerness to learn about affordable housing and housing policy
    • Comfortable with productive conflict

    Preferred Qualifications:

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, including those beginning their careers in housing or advocacy.
