Emma’s Torch is a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers refugees, asylees, and survivors of human trafficking through culinary training, career readiness, and job placement. We believe in the power of storytelling — not just in the dishes we serve, but in the narratives that shape our community. We are looking for a thoughtful, creative, and mission-driven Marketing and Communications Associate to help tell the Emma’s Torch story in compelling, strategic, and values-aligned ways.
About the Role
The Marketing and Communications Associate will support Emma’s Torch’s external communications, ensuring that our messaging, digital presence, media partnerships, and storytelling reflect our mission, amplify our impact, and strengthen our brand. This role will report directly to the Development Manager and work closely with our social venture and program teams.
This is a full-time, hybrid position based in our Silver Spring, MD location, with some travel required
Key Responsibilities
Digital Marketing & Social Media
- Manage Emma’s Torch’s social media presence (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), creating content calendars and posting regular, engaging updates
- Oversee email marketing campaigns (e.g., newsletters, appeals, announcements)
- Monitor analytics and adjust digital strategies accordingly
- Work directly with Social Ventures teams to ensure marketing is driving revenue goals
Media & External Relations
- Manage relationships with press and media outlets; pitch and secure stories that highlight Emma’s Torch’s work and impact
- Draft press releases, talking points, and op-eds for leadership as needed
- Coordinate communications around key events, campaigns, and announcements
Storytelling & Content Creation
- Gather and amplify stories from our students, alumni, staff, and partners in a respectful and dignified way
- Produce content (written, visual, and multimedia) for use across platforms, working with photographers, videographers, and designers as needed
- Support fundraising efforts by creating compelling donor communications and collateral
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who is passionate about our mission and excited to bring their creativity and strategic thinking to our team.
Required Qualifications:
- 2–5 years of experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field
- Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills
- Strong understanding of social media platforms, email marketing tools (e.g., Mailchimp), and design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite)
- Ability to balance big-picture strategy with day-to-day execution
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, collaborative, mission-driven environment
Bonus Points For:
- Experience working in the nonprofit or social enterprise space
- Knowledge of the media landscape and existing press relationships
- Familiarity with issues surrounding immigration, workforce development, or social justice
