    Job Description

    COACHING IS A SEASONAL POSITION

    • All Head coaches report directly to the Athletic Director at the school site. Head Coaches have the primary responsibility for administering all levels of their sport. The successful candidate will be required to follow the procedures of the school's athletic program as well as those of the Academic Athletic Association (AAA)/CIF SF Section , California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and San Francisco Unified School District.
    • All Assistant Coaches report directly to the Head Coach.
    • All Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Volunteer Coaches are required to comply with SFUSD board policies including but not limited to:
    • SFUSD Board Policy 4019.1- Professional Adult/Student Boundaries
    • SFUSD Board Policy 4034 Sexual Harassment
    • SFUSD employees are required to take Mandated Reporter training during the course of their regular employment. However, Non-SFUSD employees Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches (“Walkon Coaches”) will also be required to complete the follow SFUSD trainings immediately after being hired (prior to starting their season):
    • Mandated Reporter Training
    • Adult-Student Boundaries Training

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR HEAD COACH

    • At least one (1) year of head coaching experience or three (3) years of other coaching experience in the specific sport they will lead at the high school. All coaching experience must have occurred after the coach has graduated from High School.
    • Current certification for:
      • First Aid & CPR/AED certification - all sports
      • Concussion Training - all sports
      • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training - all sports
      • Heat Illness Prevention Training certificates - all sports
      • Swim Coach Safety Training or Lifeguarding certificate (all swimming coaches)
      • NFHS or ASEP Coaching Course certification

    HEAD COACH DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Demonstrated and in-depth knowledge of the sport with the ability to increase students’ knowledge of the sport and develop players’ individual areas of growth.
    • A natural motivator who can develop the social, emotional, and mental health of student-athletes.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and execute proper training methods for their specific sport
    • A proven history of positive staff, student, and administrative support and relationships.
    • Possesses the ability to lead, mentor and supervise assistants.
    • A proven history of placing appropriate emphasis on good sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.
    • A demonstrated ability to teach, enforce, advocate and model appropriate behavior, character traits, and educational values to student-athletes.
    • The ability to understand how to build and create a culture of compliance, athletics competitiveness and academic excellence with student-athletes and staff.
    • Must be an effective communicator and possess strong organizational skills.
    • Strong administrative skills, which includes proficiency but not limited to Home Campus, ScoreBook Live, Go Fan, Arbiter, Google Suite Applications, and Time Keeping

    HEAD COACH DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Has full responsibility for the overall supervision and development of their program, including the junior varsity (if high school), and off-season training program. Head coach must always be present at athletic events and practice/training. If the coach is unable to be present, they must have a Site Administrator or (Paid) Assistant Coach be present.
    • In charge of assignments and duties of the assistant coaches as all lower levels under his/her supervision. Immediately reports any inappropriate behavior or misconduct by assistant coaches to Athletic Director and Site Administrative Supervisor (Principal or AP).
    • Ensure that all assistant coaches, including unpaid volunteer coaches, meet the minimum qualifications. It is the coach’s ultimate responsibility to ensure that volunteer coaches are not permitted to coach practices and/or games without supervision from head coach, assistant coach and/or school site Admin.
    • In coordination with the Athletic Director, plans and implements the scheduling of team activities which includes but not limited to: practices, school wide events, community involvement, etc...
    • Educate student-athletes to perform sound, safe fundamental techniques of the designated sport throughout the season.
    • Responsible for communicating with athletic administration, parents, and student-athletes via email.
    • Follows CIF State and CIF San Francisco Section (if high school), and AAA League policies, siteprocedures, bylaws and rules.
    • Fosters trainings in conduct, ethics, and sportsmanship for all participants and coaches.
    • Responsible for the safety and securing of the team before, during, and after events and traveling to and from events. A coach is required to ride the bus/Van with the team.
    • Works with the Athletic Director and the Principal to maintain communication and to solve problems at the school level while supporting the ideas of the program/parent concernprocedures.
    • Oversees the safety conditions of the facility or area in which the assigned sport is conducted at all times athletes are present. Reports any unsafe conditions to the Athletic Director promptly to correct safety hazards.
    • Sets up a preseason parent orientation meeting to go over program philosophy, expectationand policies.
    • Complies with time constraints for practice and contest schedules, including Holidays/Saturdays, as well as off-season schedules.
    • Attend all district lead pre and post season coaches meetings.
    • In partnership with the Athletic Director, ensure all student-athletes are registered and cleared for participation within Home Campus.
    • Ensures all assistant coaches are registered with Home Campus.
