WomenShelter of Long Beach (WSLB) is seeking an astute, forward-thinking, and community-minded Director of Finance to strategically guide our financial operations and support our vital mission.
About the Role
The Director of Finance is responsible for the financial health and integrity of WSLB. This role oversees all accounting operations, budget preparation, grant compliance, and financial reporting to the Interim Executive Director and Board of Directors. The ideal candidate is expertly skilled in nonprofit finance and payroll, and has strong experience navigating complex federal, state, and county grants and funding initiatives. Compensation Range
$90,000 – $110,000 annual salary (DOE)
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Payroll (30%)
- Oversee all accounts payable/receivable, payroll processing, bank reconciliations, and cash flow management.
- Ensure precise execution of payroll, leveraging a demonstrated understanding of complex California wage & hour laws.
Grant Compliance & Fund Management (30%)
- Monitors and manages all grant spending in alignment with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Proven ability to manage the "Cost Allocation" process allocating & billing staff time and expenses correctly to the specific grants that fund their respective programs.
Budgeting & Strategic Planning (25%)
- Develop the annual organizational budget.
- Provide accurate, timely monthly and year end financial statements to the Interim ED and the Board.
- Advise the leadership team on financial forecasting, risk management, and resource allocation.
Audit & Risk Management (15%)
- Serve as the primary lead for the annual independent audit.
- Experience managing insurance policies specific to non-profits (Directors & Officers, Professional Liability coverage.)
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA or Master’s preferred.)
- 5+ years of progressive financial management experience, strictly within the non-profit sector.
- Deep expertise in non-profit fund accounting, grant compliance, and accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Enterprise, MIP, or Sage).
- Mastery of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for non-profits.
- Demonstrated understanding of California wage & hour regulations and payroll processing.
- Valid CA driver’s license and auto insurance.
Desired Skills & Attributes
- Experience tracking "Restricted" vs. "Unrestricted" funds across multiple government contracts (Cal OES, HUD, City of Long Beach).
- Experience leading Single Audits (Uniform Guidance) for organizations receiving over $750k in federal funding.
- Ability to provide the Interim ED with "Burn Rate" analysis and cash flow forecasting to navigate the delayed reimbursement cycles common in government granting.
- Commitment to trauma-informed values, equity, and the mission of WSLB.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Able to climb stairs and lift/carry up to 20 lbs.
- Willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.

Since 1977, WSLB has helped thousands of women, men, and children overcome the trauma caused by domestic abuse. WSLB assists families by providing safe housing, counseling, case management, education, health, and legal advocacy at no cost. To empower future generations, WSLB also provides “Healthy Relationships” and “Teen Dating Violence” prevention education in middle schools, high schools, and colleges throughout Long Beach and surrounding areas.
History and Background
WSLB was founded by Dr. Virginia Corbett in 1977. In 1999, the agency opened the Domestic Violence Resource Center (DVRC), the first community-based, storefront counseling and resource center in Greater Long Beach—offering easily accessible outreach services. WSLB continues to provide compassionate, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered services to those impacted by domestic violence.
