UFCW Local 770 is seeking a motivated and creative Communications Associate to join our Communications Department. This entry-level role is ideal for someone who is passionate about storytelling, digital media, and lifting up the voices of workers in the grocery, retail drug, cannabis, healthcare, meatpacking, and specialty coffee industries. The Communications Associate will support day-to-day communications, help produce compelling content across multiple platforms, manage multiple digital channels, and spend time in the field gathering stories, photos, and videos from frontline workers.
This is a fast-paced, hands-on position that includes occasional evenings and weekends based on campaign needs. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Digital Communications & Content Creation
- Create and post content across all social media platforms; track analytics and engagement trends to grow audiences.
- Maintain and update the union website (Squarespace).
- Produce short-form videos, photos, and graphics for social media, campaigns, and member communications.
- Edit and produce flyers, newsletters, stickers, ads, and other print and digital materials.
- Develop social media toolkits and basic digital strategy plans for campaigns.
- Assist in drafting messaging, e-blasts, text blasts, and member updates using platforms such as Sidekick, Hustle, Action Network, Mailchimp, and Canva.
- Help maintain a content calendar.
Field Reporting & Member Storytelling
- Visit worksites to interview members and gather stories, quotes, photos, and videos.
- Build rapport with members to spotlight their experiences and connect individual issues to broader campaigns.
- Support staff in covering actions, rallies, bargaining sessions, and workplace events.
Communications Support & Coordination
- Assist with writing press releases, fact sheets, talking points, speeches, and web content.
- Help monitor media coverage and research relevant trends.
- Collaborate with staff, organizers, and community partners to develop messaging and communications plans.
- Provide logistical support for events, including actions, delegations, and press opportunities.
- Participate in digital outreach and maintain positive relationships with members and community allies.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to synthesize complex topics into accessible language.
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities; comfortable navigating fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Creative mindset with an interest in storytelling, worker narratives, and social justice.
- Proficiency with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, YouTube).
- Working knowledge of digital tools such as Squarespace, Canva, Mailchimp, Action Network, and Zoom.
- Basic video editing and photo/video shooting skills.
- Comfortable conducting interviews and engaging with members in the field.
- Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed.
Preferred (Not Required) Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Background or interest in labor, community organizing, worker advocacy, or social justice.
- Experience designing print and digital communications.
- Familiarity with AP Style.
