About the position:
The mission of the Controller role is to lead the finance team in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and full compliance with all regulations. This person will play a key role in guiding the team, improving financial systems and processes, and providing reliable financial insights to support smart decision-making and long-term success.
Key Outcomes:
In the first 90 days (about 3 months), the Controller will:
Learn and live the Americares values.
Complete all required new hire onboarding training.
Build strong working relationships with the finance team and key stakeholders across the organization.
Review and assess current financial systems, reporting processes, and internal controls, and identify opportunities for improvement.
Take ownership of the monthly close and financial reporting process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Begin leading the team in preparing for the annual audit and identifying any potential risks or gaps.
Provide clear, organized financial reporting to support leadership decision-making and help align the budget with strategic goals.
In the first 6 months, the Controller will:
Fully lead the monthly close, audit prep, and financial reporting processes with minimal oversight.
Strengthen internal controls and begin implementing process improvements that reduce errors and increase efficiency.
Oversee team development by setting clear expectations, identifying skill gaps, and beginning to coach team members for stronger performance.
Partner with the CFO to improve financial forecasting and reporting templates used by leadership and programs teams.
Lead the organization through a successful audit with clean results and timely submission of all deliverables.
Ensure compliance with all financial policies, donor requirements, and regulatory obligations.
In the first year, the Controller will:
Fully own and continuously improve the monthly close, audit, and financial reporting processes, delivering consistent, high-quality results.
Implement key system and process improvements that increase efficiency, accuracy and transparency across the finance function.
Develop a high-performing finance team by building capacity, clarifying roles, and fostering accountability and professional growth.
Lead successful completion of the annual audit, 990, NICRA, and any key donor or compliance reviews with clean results.
Strengthen the organization’s internal controls and risk management practices, with updated policies and documented procedures.
Serve as a trusted advisor to the CFO and Leadership Team, providing financial insights that guide strategic and operational decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead the monthly close and financial reporting process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with GAAP and organizational processes.
Oversee annual audits, tax filings (ex: 990), and NICRA submissions, ensuring full compliance and successful outcomes.
Strengthen internal controls, update financial policies and procedures, and ensure adherence across the organization.
Supervise and develop the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, growth and continuous improvement.
Partner with the Senior Director, Treasury to monitor and manage cash flow, ensuring liquidity and alignment with organizational priorities.
Drive improvements in financial systems, reporting tools, and workflows to increase efficiency and support decision making.
Collaborate with CFO and FP&A team to ensure accurate budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.

Degrees and/or experience required for the role:
Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting or related field
8-10 years of progressive leadership experience in a global non-profit
Active CPA license
These competencies are required for the role:
Demonstrated ability to lead end-to end financial operations with accuracy, timeliness, and integrity, including managing audits, compliance, and financial reporting in complex, multi-entity environments.
Demonstrated ability to manage and develop high performing accounting teams of 5 or more.
Demonstrated ability to drive process improvement and build strong cross-functional partnerships across departments and geographies.
Deep understanding and experience in GAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, and international financial operations, including managing foreign currency, country office oversight, and donor compliance.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate, implement, and optimize financial systems (e.g., ERP platforms) to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability across global operations.
Robust track record of designing, implementing, and monitoring internal controls to ensure compliance, safeguard assets, and mitigate financial and operational risk.
Ability to collaborate effectively with Treasury to manage global cash flow, anticipate funding needs, and maintain financial stability across multiple entities and currencies.
Deep knowledge of donor requirements (e.g., USAID, UN, private foundations) and experience ensuring compliance with financial reporting, cost allocation, and audit standards.
Experience leading annual financial audits, 990 preparation, and other external financial reporting with clean results and strong stakeholder communication.
Ability to translate financial insights into strategic guidance, partnering closely with program, development, and executive teams to drive mission-aligned decisions and resource allocation.
Experience successfully leading finance transformation initiatives, such as restructuring teams, rolling out new systems, or navigating organizational shifts while maintaining strong performance.
Demonstrated success working across diverse cultural and geographic contexts, fostering strong relationships with international teams and ensuring alignment with global operations.
US work authorization is required for this role.
Candidates must be currently living in and will continue to live in one of the following states/territories: CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, MD, MA, NC, NJ, NY, OR, PA, Puerto Rico, TN, TX, VA, or WA.
