    The Organization

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (GLI) is the nation’s leading nonprofit and nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of American history through educational programs and resources. We serve K–12 teachers and students, honor scholars, and welcome and inform the general public.

Since its founding in 1994, GLI has created powerful and meaningful ways to teach and learn history. Focusing on primary sources, the Institute offers teacher seminars, online courses, exhibitions, digital materials, and print publications that enable students of all ages and backgrounds to study the nation’s past.

The Institute brings the work of today’s leading historians into classrooms and homes worldwide. Through public events, publications, posters, videos, exhibitions, essays, and a dedicated website rich in primary sources, GLI brings every period of American history to life. Diverse education programs, including the acclaimed Hamilton Education Program, provide opportunities to explore five centuries of American history. The Gilder Lehrman Affiliate School network comprises more than 14 million students and 97,000 educators from more than 37,000 schools worldwide.

They will help strengthen GLI’s core marketing levers (such as email marketing and conferences) while also developing more targeted strategies to reach, re-engage, and grow participation across these programs and GLI in general. This position translates strategy into results-oriented, well-executed campaigns, pilots, and initiatives grounded in data, testing, and continuous improvement. The Marketing and Communications Manager will work closely with colleagues across Development, Programs, and IT departments.

This role will be based in New York City, and currently requires working in person at least two days per week in GLI’s midtown office and occasional travel for conferences and in-person events (estimated at 10% of time).

    • Develop and implement targeted strategies to better reach, retain, and re-engage GLI’s core audiences, including educators, school leaders, districts, and partners

    • Commitment to GLI’s mission
    • Demonstrated progressive experience in marketing, communications, audience development, or growth-focused roles, preferably within educational, nonprofit, or mission-driven organizations
    • Experience executing and optimizing successful marketing campaigns across multiple channels, including email, social media, and event-based marketing
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to craft compelling marketing messages, stories, and copy that prompt action
    • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously
    • Analytical and results-oriented mindset with comfort using data
    • An exceptional ability to collaborate and communicate positively with colleagues, both on the Marketing and Communications team and across departments
    • Flexible, solutions-oriented approach to working with others and building a strong team culture
