Position Title: Senior Fightback Campaigner

Position Location: Candidates are welcome to apply from across the U.S. Those that are near a Popular Democracy office in DC or Brooklyn may be asked to work from the office one or two days/week if necessary. Applicants outside of those areas may be required to travel to a Popular Democracy office occasionally.

Popular Democracy is seeking a Senior Fightback Campaigner to join the Fightback Department. This is a full-time, exempt position.

Popular Democracy works to promote equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy in partnership with innovative base-building organizations, organizing networks and alliances, and progressive unions across the country. We work with 50 affiliates in 34 states and DC to build the strength and capacity of democratic organizations that envision and advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial and economic justice agenda. We are a rapidly-expanding, changing organization that partners with organizations across the country to build political power and win tangible victories that improve the lives of low-wage workers, immigrants, and communities of color.

About the Position:

We are seeking a Senior Fightback Campaigner to use the crises and opportunities of the moment to vastly expand the network's base, develop leaders, move those people into action, and change the narrative in the process. This includes contributing to some fundraising to support the work, holding primary responsibility in assigned issue area(s), guiding affiliates in advancing Popular Democracy’s goals, and building alliances with groups outside of the network. All of this work will move in deep partnership with colleagues across the programmatic departments of Fightback, Organizing, and Communications & Narrative. Working with affiliates, allies, and individuals to build political and community power, this position will organize actions and other events to contest for power, deepening understanding and building capacity across the network.

It is expected that the Senior Fightback Campaigner will travel and attend in-person trainings, meetings, and actions with Popular Democracy affiliates and partners approximately 4 times a month.

We estimate that candidates will have 10 years of relevant experience, but our review of candidates for this role will focus on whether they can fill the needs of the position, not years of experience.

The Senior Fightback Campaigner will report to the Director of Fightback.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Senior Fightback Campaigner will:

• Develop and sustain positive relationships with affiliate organizations, partners, policy makers, and funders, encouraging participation and support for Popular Democracy’s efforts with guidance from supervisor.
• Work with the Organizing and Communications and Narrative teams to support affiliates in developing campaigns within assigned issue areas that align with Popular Democracy’s fightback efforts.
• Hold primary responsibility for Puerto Rico advocacy efforts that include organizing the PR diaspora and supporting local campaigns around displacement and worker organizing, while working on some or all other issue areas.
• In assigned areas identified as key to contesting for power, identify, plan, and execute campaigns or programs to advance the Fightback narrative.
• Upon identification and assignment of issue areas, work with internal stakeholders, allies, and partners to design and develop a program and campaign that includes:
  • A theory of the issue with a cogent message and narrative that motivates people to action.
  • Preparation of sense making materials that allow members and community groups to explain and advance our goals.
  • Planning and conducting trainings, both in-person and online.
  • Identifying opportunities for peer learning.
  • Creating events, programs, demonstrations, activities for the campaign.
  • Determining the order and the steps necessary to execute the campaign for best outcomes.
  • Innovating and implementing systems to set and track growth in accordance with goals.
• Provide strategic and tactical support for events in assigned campaigns.
• Lead and facilitate cohort meetings for targeted groups, which includes determining the schedule of meetings, creating the agenda, evaluating planning steps on an ongoing basis, and implementing each step of the campaign.
• Work with affiliates to expand their base by identifying local leaders and providing opportunities for growth.
• Lead work both within the Fightback team and across departments as assigned by/in consultation with supervisor.
• Maintain relationships gained in campaigns, integrating campaign leaders and participants into Popular Democracy’s base.
• Transfer participants from single issue campaigns to other issues, moving more and more people to action.
• Compile and maintain data and lists relevant to the campaign to use for future campaigns and developing future leaders.
• Support fundraising efforts as assigned, including providing background materials and writing routine and prospecting grant proposals and reports, and/or participating in relevant meetings with donors or donor forums.
• Other related duties as needed and assigned.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

• Significant experience in organizing and local/grassroots campaign development;
• Demonstrated basebuilding experience;
• Experience in campaign and policy research;
• Strong facilitation meeting skills;
• Experience working in coalitions and alliances;
• Fluency in Spanish language skills;
• A demonstrated ability to build relationships with a broad range of people that move them into action;
• The ability to work independently, navigate obstacles, discern priorities, and meet competing deadlines;
• Experience working with Popular Democracy affiliates;
• Database skills and experience with tools such as Every Action, Hustle, and ThruTalk;
• A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep understanding of challenges facing low-wage workers, immigrant communities, communities of color, disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, and people at the intersections of the above communities.

Hiring Process:

Candidates should expect to participate in two rounds of group interviews and a job simulation exercise. Final candidates will be asked to provide references.
