    About Us

The Bronx is Blooming is a Bronx-based environmental nonprofit dedicated to growing and supporting a culture of environmental stewardship across the borough. Through youth leadership, environmental education, community engagement, and hands-on restoration in local parks and green spaces, we empower Bronx residents—especially youth—to connect with nature, develop leadership skills, and build healthier, greener communities.

    Position Overview

The Senior Accountant is a key member of our leadership team and will oversee all financial operations of the organization. We are open to candidates seeking a full-time role.

This role is responsible for accurate financial reporting, general ledger management and compliance with federal grant management requirements and accounting standards applicable to nonprofit organizations. This role works closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director, program leads, and with oversight of the bookkeeper.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Federal Grants & Compliance

      • Manage all aspects of federal grant funding, including compliance, reporting, documentation, reimbursement processes, and audit readiness.
      • Track and monitor allowable costs, staff time allocation, and spending related to federal awards.
      • Ensure the organization meets all federal rules and requirements (e.g., 2 CFR Part 200/Uniform Guidance).
      • Support the preparation of tax filings and regulatory reports, including Form 990 and other required compliance documentation

    Financial Management & Administration

      • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting procedures.
      • Maintain and optimize financial systems to ensure accurate tracking of expenses, revenue, and project-based funding streams.
      • Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports aligned with nonprofit best practices.
      • Strengthen internal controls and enhance financial policies to support organizational growth.

    Systems, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

      • Assess current financial workflows, tools, and controls; lead improvements to ensure transparency, efficiency, and audit readiness.
      • Manage financial systems for both internal operations and cross-organizational partnerships.
      • Provide clear, timely dashboards and real-time financial snapshots for organizational leadership.

    Board & Leadership Engagement

      • Serve as the financial liaison to the Board Finance Committee, preparing monthly reports and presenting financial updates.
      • Provide strategic guidance and recommendations to leadership to support long-term sustainability and mission alignment.
      • Participate in organizational planning, risk management, and scenario modeling.

    Qualifications

    Required:

      • Bachelor's Degree in finance or accounting
      • Proven experience in federal grant management, especially within nonprofit or public-sector environments.
      • Strong knowledge of Uniform Guidance and compliance requirements for federal funding.
      • Experience managing nonprofit financial systems, budgeting, and reporting.
      • Demonstrated ability to manage cash flow, build financial projections, and design tracking systems.
      • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate financial information for non-financial stakeholders.
      • Proficiency with Quickbooks, accounting software and financial management tools.

    Preferred:

      • CPA, accounting, or related field with at least 5+ years of accounting experience.
      • Experience working with community-based organizations, youth-serving nonprofits, or environmental organizations.
      • Familiarity with multi-fund or multi-contract funding environments.

    Personal Attributes

We are looking for someone who is:

      • Mission-driven and committed to community impact.
      • Detail-oriented, organized, and proactive.
      • Collaborative, transparent, and solutions-focused.
      • Able to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.
