MIStudentsDream is hiring a Part-Time Community Organizer to support a team of dedicated volunteers and organizers fighting for immigration justice within metro Detroit schools. This position would be responsible for outreach, meeting facilitation, financial management, organizing/advocacy strategy, and logistics alongside our core team organizers.
Position Details and Responsibilities
- Community Organizing
- Utilize the “organizing cycle” including base building, listening, leadership development, research, action, and evaluation to co-lead and support member-initiated campaigns for education and immigration justice.
- Financial Management
- Manage MISD budget alongside core team members
- Track and manage purchases
- Update budget
- Communicate budget needs to core team
- Meeting planning and facilitation
- Plan and co-facilitate youth and educator team meetings alongside MISD members and leaders.
- Meeting and organization logistics
- Manage logistics such as food orders, venue reservations, etc. for meetings at least 3 times per month.
- Support with youth transportation to and from meetings.
- Outreach and graphic design
- Develop social media and outreach graphics to promote the work of MISD.
- Engage in coalition work
- Participate in coalition meetings (ie. 482Forward, Drive Michigan Forward, People’s Assembly) as a representative of MISD.
- Currently does not supervise other employees.
- Significant travel is expected (within metro Detroit only).

Qualifications
- Work Experience & Education Level:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Experience working with diverse populations required
- Skills & Attributes:
- Excellent communication skills in both relaying and receiving information required
- Commitment to economic, racial, gender, and social justice required
- Knowledge of issues impacting Detroiters, especially BIPOC, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and working-class people required
- Proficiency with Google Drive and Gmail
- Proficiency with managing a complex, changing schedule
- Experience with basic graphic design tools such as Canva preferred but not required
- Experience managing social media for an organization preferred but not required
- Languages & Proficiency:
- Proficiency in English required
- Proficient in Spanish, Bangla, or Arabic preferred but not required
- Physical Demands
- Ability to drive and access to a vehicle required
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally preferred
Additional Job Specifications
- Job Classification: Independent contractor
- Job Length: 12 month contract
- Compensation: $25/hour
- Work Schedule: Up to 10 hours per week, daily schedule is flexible and will be decided in consultation with the supervisor.
- Location: Metro Detroit, virtual and in person work required
