    Finance Manager

    Summary

    The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all financial activities. This is a proactive, high-visibility hybrid role that blends strategic financial planning with hands-on accounting for a professional who thrives on the delivery of high-quality financial processes, insights and advice, solving problems and continuous improvement. This role includes managing the monthly close, annual budgeting and financial planning and analysis processes, contract management, and leading annual audit support. The Finance Manager will supervise and train personnel, maintain internal controls, and ensure adherence to financial provisions and compliance requirements.

    Responsibilities

    Financial Management, Planning & Analysis

    • In close collaboration with our outsourced accounting firm, manage the monthly close process to ensure that the general ledger and resulting information is accurate and timely and that appropriate schedules have been completed and reconciled.
    • Manage the preparation and distribution of financial statements and budget-vs-actual reports.
    • Lead the annual budget process planning; train and assist managers in budget development.
    • Manage the financial planning and analysis processes, including budget-vs-actual (BvA) reviews, quarterly forecasting of P&L, cash flow, and balance sheets, and variance analysis.
    • Create and maintain automated financial dashboards (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Excel) to communicate key performance indicators (KPIs) to non-financial stakeholders.
    • Manage financial system and process improvements and optimization across all finance and accounting areas. Lead special projects to automate systems, Rationalize the current software stack and streamline workflows.

    Tax, Internal Controls, and Compliance

    • Supervise, develop, and maintain appropriate internal controls and audits to ensure financial integrity.
    • Maintain and communicate the organization’s finance policies and procedures and ensure rigorous adherence to them across the school.
    • Oversee the fixed asset ledger, including additions and disposals, and validation of depreciation schedules.
    • Monitor compliance requirements, including DC Public Charter School Board (PCSB) and DCPS requirements; prepare and submit all required quarterly and annual financial and budget reports.
    • Coordinate the preparation and filings of the IRS Form 990, 1099s, and all necessary DC-specific filings.
    • Oversee contract management, including tracking contract details, ensuring proper documentation, and adhering to financial provisions and communications.

    Audit and Reporting

    • Lead the annual audit support process, coordinating with external auditors and our outsourced accounting firm to prepare all necessary documentation.
    • Supervise and coordinate the preparation of grant financial/budget proposals and reports; review and submit federal reimbursement requests.

    Team Supervision and Training

    • Supervise the AP, AR, and FP&A functions and staff.
    • Supervise, instruct, and train finance personnel and school managers on policies, procedures, and financial best practices.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management, or a related field. CPA certification is a plus.
    • Skilled understanding of accounting concepts and GAAP.
    • Minimum of five years of experience working in an accounting-related role, preferably in an education setting or non-profit.
    • Minimum of two years of supervisory experience.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Google applications.
    • Knowledge of computerized accounting, auditing procedures, and reconciling accounts.
    • Experience conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses and utilizing results to inform decision-making.
    • Tech-savvy mindset with a demonstrated interest in system automation, data visualization, and process streamlining.
    • Excellent administrative, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Strong reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
