    Position: MCE Manager (Full-time, exempt)

Start Date: Flexible by December 1, 2025

Location: Remote in USA; New York City office also available

    Pay: $70,000 - $85,000

Travel: limited travel in the United States and Canada

Heterodox Academy (HxA) fosters a culture of open inquiry on college campuses, where the pursuit of truth requires three essential conditions: the free exchange of ideas, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement. After a widespread surge of appreciation for the importance of these conditions, HxA now has the opportunity to equip its members, member communities, and college and university partners with research, data, ideas, practical resources, and training resources that can allow them to build cultures of open inquiry on campus in alignment with HxA’s Open Inquiry U Reform Agenda.

To help advance this effort, HxA seeks a Member & Campus Engagement (MCE) Manager to help translate strategy into action and support the ongoing growth of the Campus Community Network. The MCE Manager will be responsible for day-to-day management of HxA’s Campus Community Network and Heterodox Communities programs and related initiatives, as well as supporting the Director of Member & Campus Engagement, who leads the development of member strategies and program design. This role is essential to ensuring HxA’s work on campuses continues to grow, thrive, and remain aligned with broader organizational goals.

The ideal candidate will be a highly organized and relationship-oriented professional who thrives in dynamic and nuanced situations; enjoys problem-solving and collaboration; and is deeply aligned with HxA’s mission. He or she will be able to work effectively with HxA members: higher education faculty, staff, and leaders, from a wide range of disciplines, institutional settings, and ideological perspectives, who share a commitment to HxA’s mission and values.

The MCE Manager will report to HxA's Director of Member & Campus Engagement and collaborate with the MCE Associate and other staff. This is a remote position, with limited travel in the United States and Canada required.

This position is wide-ranging and collaborative, requiring some discretion and independent judgment. HxA understands that not every candidate will be equally skilled or experienced in every area. If you feel qualified for the role, but your skills and experience are not a 100% fit for every detail below, we encourage you to apply.

    Specific Duties:

    Community Operations & Stewardship

    • Serve as a primary point of contact for members, with a special focus on member leaders (e.g. Campus Community co-chairs)
    • In collaboration with the Director of Member & Campus Engagement, meet regularly with member leaders to brainstorm, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure alignment with HxA’s mission and strategic priorities
    • Coordinate financial support for the Campus Community Network and Heterodox Communities in partnership with the Operations Manager and Director of Member & Campus Engagement
    • Support community recruitment, onboarding, and retention, including:
      • Campus Community and Heterodox Community onboarding and engagement
      • Re-engagement campaigns for inactive communities
    • Collaborate with HxA’s Events Manager to promote community programs and execute regional conferences
    • Balance hands-on support with scalable system-building to ensure both short-term and long-term impact of HxA communities

    Member Communications, Cultivation, and Stewardship

    • Monitor activity across HxA’s Member Forum; engage with members and flag highlights or issues to the Director of Member & Campus Engagement
    • Draft and contribute to member-facing communications in partnership with HxA’s Communications, Marketing, and Events team, such as:
      • Monthly member and community newsletters
      • Member onboarding sequences and welcome emails
      • Program reminders
    • Support the cultivation of member relationships to facilitate deeper engagement and connection across the HxA network

    Systems, Data Tracking, and Reporting

    • In collaboration with MCE colleagues, maintain accurate records of member and community engagement and activity in Hubspot
    • Generate reports and dashboards in Hubspot to visualize progress and impact
    • Support Director of Member and Campus Engagement in providing impact metrics and data reporting to the broader HxA team
    • Contribute ideas for improving systems, processes, and tools based on ongoing feedback and experience

    Experience Desired:

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in community engagement, member or volunteer relations, and/or program management
    • Strong attention to detail, record-keeping, and follow-through
    • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities with the ability to tailor communications to varied audiences
    • Proficiency in CRM and data tools (HubSpot experience preferred)
    • Comfort working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
    • Basic data visualization or reporting experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in higher education or familiarity with academic institutions
    • Understanding of HxA’s mission and the concepts of viewpoint diversity, open inquiry, and constructive disagreement
    • A natural “people person” who can engage diverse personalities with professionalism, empathy, and tact.
    • Prior experience supporting the growth and impact of mission-driven initiatives across a network of dispersed locations and institutions. Experience doing this work in academia and/or a non-profit is a plus.

    Essential Attributes:

    • Strong alignment with HxA's mission and values
    • Intellectual curiosity, humility, and dexterity, including positive collaboration across diverse viewpoints
    • Adaptability, initiative, and sound judgment in complex situations
    • Ability to work effectively in a small, nimble organization
