    Who We Are

The Mountaineers is a community of outdoor recreationists and conservationists founded in 1906 to explore the peaks and waterways of the Pacific Northwest. Today, we have more than 17,000 members and seven branches in Western Washington, where we deliver most of our outdoor education programming. Thanks to the work of generations of volunteers and our internationally recognized publishing division, we continue to enjoy an outstanding reputation in the fields of outdoor education, recreation, and public lands conservation and advocacy.

Our dedicated volunteers and staff get people outside to experience the power of the natural world. We advocate for access and protection of recreational lands so that future generations can enjoy these places too. Our core value of community reflects the belief that a diverse and inclusive outdoors inspires unity, respect, and passion for the places we love. Our 55 staff, divided between our program centers and our nonprofit publishing division, Mountaineers Books, and 3,000+ volunteers work together to achieve our mission to enrich lives by helping people explore, conserve, learn about, and enjoy the lands and waters of the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The role serves as product owner for mountaineers.org and Salesforce, leading Salesforce development and contributing to website development alongside our contract development team. It also oversees IT operations, vendor relationships, and data governance, and serves as the primary liaison between staff, contractors, volunteers, and partner organizations for all technical projects and systems.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration (15%)

    • Lead The Mountaineers’ overall technology vision, strategy, and roadmap.
    • Collaborate with the CEO, Director of Finance and Administration, and other Mountaineers leaders to develop and manage the annual technology budget for programs and publishing.
    • Coordinate with both programming and publishing teams to manage and balance technology initiatives across divisions.
    • Serve as the primary internal expert in technology decision-making, systems architecture, and process optimization.
    • Lead an internal AI Committee and pilot emerging AI and technologies that improve workflows, engagement, and capacity.

    Product Management & Development (40%)

    • Serve as product owner for mountaineers.org and Salesforce, setting strategy, translating end-user needs, prioritizing features, and managing the roadmap.
    • Contribute as an in-house developer on mountaineers.org, utilizing AI coding tools alongside our contract development team, handling updates, fixes, and smaller features in Plone (Python), HTML/CSS, and GitHub.
    • Project manage website sprints with external contractors end to end, including defining scope and requirements, coordinating timelines and deliverables, reviewing work, and leading QA and user acceptance testing through launch.
    • Architect and implement all Salesforce development and administration, including object modeling, building Flows, coding Apex automation, and building integrations with third-party platforms such as Marketing Cloud, Coassemble, and Xappex.

    Technology Operations & Support (30%)

    • Oversee IT infrastructure and support, supervising part-time IT staff to manage permissions, hardware, and device security across platforms like Microsoft 365 and Zoom.
    • Lead technology changes and organization-wide initiatives, such as migrations and integrations, from tool selection through staff training and adoption, ensuring systems are cost-effective, secure, and compatible.
    • Manage technology vendors and contractors across all departments, defining scopes of work, negotiating licensing, and tracking deliverables.
    • Maintain and build relationships with peer organizations to increase collaboration and knowledge sharing, including the website partnership with Colorado Mountain Club.

    • Recruit and lead a team of technical volunteers, creating processes for their contributions to development, testing, and analytics across mountaineers.org and Salesforce

Beyond vacation time, staff receive dedicated activity days to join Mountaineers courses, activities, and events. We believe the best technology decisions come from knowing the people they serve, so we fully support and encourage this role’s involvement in our community. Developing strong relationships with members and volunteers is an essential part of the job and will help shape how our website and systems grow.
