    Position: Director of Development

    Reports To: President & CEO

    Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt

    Work Schedule: The typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, generally between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Pacific. Schedule flexibility is required as this position is expected to attend and support occasional evening and weekend donor meetings, community engagements, special events, and training.

    Salary Range: $75,000–$80,000 DOE

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Boys & Clubs of South County is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and relationship-driven Director of Development to join the team. Reporting to the President & CEO, this position will develop and implement a strong, proactive, and diversified fundraising program to ensure the Club’s financial sustainability, growth, and long-term impact. In partnership with the President & CEO and Board of Directors, this position will be responsible for developing and executing strategic fundraising initiatives across major gifts, grants, corporate partnerships, foundation giving, special events, annual campaigns, and individual giving programs. The Director of Development will oversee donor prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship, grant development and reporting, fundraising communications, CRM systems, financial tracking, and board engagement in fundraising efforts to advance the Club’s mission. This role is a strategic leader responsible for strengthening philanthropic investment, expanding community partnerships, and building a culture of philanthropy across the organization.

    The ideal candidate for this position will be collaborative, entrepreneurial, process-oriented, energetic, and adaptable. They will be well-versed in fundraising best practices, with the experience in developing strategic and effective fundraising plans, executing these plans to meet objectives, and problem-solving independently. Working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, the Director of Development will need to be highly self-motivated, creative, and personally accountable. This position may be based in Chula Vista or Imperial Beach, CA, and may require travel to Club sites, events, conferences, training, and donor meetings. Greater San Diego-based hybrid candidates may be considered.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities

    1. Fundraising Strategy & Planning
      • Contribute to the planning and implementation of the strategic plan by leading and executing fundraising activities, campaigns, initiatives, and events.
      • Manage administrative and operational systems tracking fundraising revenue and pipeline and compile income status and variance reports for the President & CEO and the Board of Directors.
      • Provide support for various fundraising projects and initiatives assigned by the CEO such as endowments, major gifts, and planned giving.
      • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Club’s annual budget, controlling expenditures within budget and maintaining donor and financial records in accordance with industry standards.
      • Develop strategic alliances with community leaders and local officials.
      • Develop collaborative partnerships with other youth-serving organizations, members, parents, families, funders, and community organizations.
    2. Corporate Partnerships
      • Cultivate and steward new and existing corporate sponsors and business partners.
      • Identify new partnership opportunities within the local and regional community.
      • Represent the organization at community events, chambers, networking forums, and stakeholder meetings.
      • Develop mutually beneficial sponsorship packages and recognition opportunities.
      • Strengthen visibility and positioning of the Club within the local and regional philanthropic and corporate community.
    3. Donor Relations & Stewardship
      • Design and oversee a comprehensive donor stewardship plan.
      • Ensure timely acknowledgment, recognition, and impact reporting for all donors.
      • Maintain meaningful engagement strategies to increase donor retention and upgrade giving.
      • Support donor appreciation events and recognition initiatives.
    4. Individual Giving & Major Gifts
      • Develop and manage annual giving campaigns.
      • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects.
      • Build and manage a portfolio of major gift and individual donors.
      • Partner with the President & CEO and Board members on high-level solicitations.
      • Create personalized donor engagement strategies.
    5. Grant Writing & Management
      • Research and identify foundation and government grant funding opportunities.
      • Write compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and impact reports.
      • Manage grant calendars, deadlines, reporting requirements, and compliance.
      • Collaborate with program staff to gather data, outcomes, and impact stories.
      • Ensure alignment between grant commitments and program delivery.
      • Provide writing support for foundation and corporate grant requests.
      • Ensure timely and accurate submission of grant proposals.
    6. Special Fundraising Events & Campaigns
      • Lead planning and execution of fundraising events and campaigns.
      • Develop revenue goals, sponsorship strategies, and event budgets.
      • Oversee logistics, vendor coordination, and volunteer engagement.
      • Evaluate event ROI and recommend improvements for future growth.
    7. Donor Database & CRM Management
      • Oversee donor database and CRM systems, ensuring accuracy and integrity of donor and gift records.
      • Establish systems for donor tracking, segmentation, reporting, and analytics.
      • Manage gift processing, donor acknowledgments, and data entry standards, policies, and operating procedures.
      • Utilize data insights to guide fundraising strategies and donor communications.
    8. Donor Communications:
      • Partner with the Director of Communications to craft compelling fundraising messaging and materials.
      • Collaborate with the Director of Communications on donor impact reports, newsletters, cases for support, and appeals.
      • Ensure the use of consistent donor-centric messaging aligned with the Club’s brand and mission.
      • Support digital fundraising initiatives, including strategic and tactical support of email and online giving campaigns.
    9. Board & Volunteer Fundraisers:
      • Engage and support the Board of Directors in fundraising efforts.
      • Provide tools, training, and materials to empower Board Members as ambassadors and solicitors.
      • Support fundraising committees and volunteer-led initiatives.
      • Track and encourage board giving and participation goals.
    10. Financial Tracking & Accountability
      • Develop and manage the annual development budget.
      • Track fundraising revenue against projections and adjust strategies as needed.
      • Ensure proper documentation, donor compliance, and financial transparency.
      • Partner with Finance staff to reconcile contributions and ensure accurate financial reporting.
      • Prepare monthly and quarterly revenue reports for Leadership and Board review.
    11. Team Leadership & Cross-Departmental Collaboration
      • Collaborate with Program, Operations, Communications, and Finance teams to align funding with programmatic priorities.
      • Foster a culture of philanthropy across the organization.
      • Ensure fundraising efforts reflect equity, inclusion, and community-centered values.
      • Supervise Development staff or consultants, if applicable.

    QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

    Position Requirements

    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout office and event environments for extended periods.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–30 pounds (event supplies, donor materials, etc.).
    • Ability to travel locally for donor meetings, community events, and site visits.
    • Occasional evening and weekend work for events and engagements.
    • Commitment to mission-driven work and the ability to represent the Club with enthusiasm and integrity.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent professional experience.
    • Minimum of 3 years of fundraising experience and/or prior professional experience in a related field such as sales, marketing, or business development.
    • Experience in youth-serving or mission-driven nonprofit organizations preferred.
    • Demonstrated success of securing grants and sponsorships, as well as cultivating, stewarding, soliciting, and closing gifts in the annual, special, and major gift range.
    • Proven skills in and ability to develop sophisticated fundraising strategies in planning, implementing, and administering major gift solicitations or other solicitations of a similar nature, level, and complexity.
    • Strong knowledge of development best practices and implementing necessary systems and processes to support an efficient and effective development operation, including budgeting, revenue forecasting, financial reporting, donor database management, etc.
    • Experience working with and engaging Board Members and executive leadership in fundraising efforts.
    • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality with donors, board members, staff, and community partners.
    • Familiarity with the local philanthropic community and funding landscape.

    • Ability to work collaboratively, build, and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders, including Club leadership and staff, board members, community leaders, donors, partner agencies, community groups, and volunteers.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

    COMPENSATION

    $75,000–$80,000; Salary range is based on qualifications. Paid benefits package including paid vacation, Medical, Vision, dental, 401(k) Plan Investment. Professional development opportunities are available contingent upon funding and approval. This position is classified as exempt and, as such, is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
