Community Legal Aid (CLA) is the civil legal aid program serving the low-income and elderly residents of Central and Western Massachusetts.
The starting salary for staff attorneys is $73,000, which is based on a union scale and adjusted upward depending on experience. Job duties for staff attorneys vary slightly based on their practice area; generally, staff attorneys interview clients and provide legal advice, information, referrals, and representation at administrative and judicial proceedings; perform legal research; negotiate with opposing parties; and participate in community and client education efforts.

- Family Law: Assist clients, primarily survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, with the full range of domestic relations cases, including divorce, restraining orders, child custody and parenting time, and child support. - Medical-Legal Partnership: Worcester-based medical-legal partnership (MLP) with UMass Memorial Health. Hold regular client intake hours at clinical sites; participate in leadership team and project evaluation meetings with clinical partners; serve as a liaison between the legal and clinical project partners; and help train, recruit, and mentor private volunteer attorneys who will accept pro bono referrals. The attorney will also handle a varied caseload involving homelessness prevention, income and health insurance maximization, domestic relations, special education, and guardianship.
