Sanctuary Animal Carer

AOOW is the only vegan animal sanctuary in Cambodia working towards animal rights!

We need someone like you to grow our sanctuary team and protect our rescued animals in Siem Reap.

As a Sanctuary Carer, you will play a vital role in delivering compassionate, high-quality care and support to resident animals, ensuring their physical, emotional, and social needs are met with dignity and respect. You will promote independence and enhance the quality of life for each animal, aligning with the Sanctuary Carer’s mission to enrich lives.

Taking care of animals is much more than playing with them! A clean shelter is ESSENTIAL to ensuring the health of our 140+ rescued cats, dogs, pigs, ducks, chickens, and cows. Animal Carers will learn about taking care of special needs animals who have lifelong health issues, such as paralysis, incontinence, deafness, blindness, and PTSD. Our senior animals also need special care.

We are a close-knit team, and those who thrive in social team environments will enjoy working with us. Siem Reap, Cambodia, is a lively town with many activities for eating, socialising, and exploring ancient civilisations and nature.

Some daily tasks may include:

• Feed the animals you are responsible for daily
• Clean all enclosures you are responsible for daily
• Complete designated tasks for each day (Monday – maintenance, Wednesday – well-being)
• Provide personalised animal care, including bathing, bladder/bowel expressing, and assisting paralysed animals with mobility
• Clean the laundry of the animals you are responsible
• Provide animals with extra care and meals – hydrotherapy, seniors, socialisation
• Provide specialised wound care (as needed)
• Administer vaccinations/parasite prevention – guided by the Sanctuary Manager/Co-founder
• Build meaningful relationships with animals
• Monitor and report changes in residents’ health and well-being
• Maintain accurate medical records in line with internal policies and care standards
• Create enrichment for the animals in the areas you are responsible for
• Ensure compliance with health and safety policies and infection control procedures
• Integrate animals into new areas/packs guided by the Sanctuary Manager/Co-Founder
• Participate in team meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Support the sanctuary tour guide with visitors (as requested)

Job Requirements and Benefits:

• $400 USD monthly (starting salary)
• Five days per week, 1 to 2 evening med checks/week
• 6 to 8 working hours per day
• Accommodation is off-site; you are responsible for your own apartment and meals
• Must have previous experience working with animals. Veterinary/vet tech experience preferred!
• Must be able to communicate well in English
• Must be an animal lover – that means ALL animals, not just cats and dogs!
• Cannot be afraid of dogs or cats – we have 100+ and you will work with them every day
• Must be able to commit to 6 months minimum – training will be involved in the beginning
• Should be able to ride a scooter or motorcycle – it’s the best means of transport

It is preferred if you have previous experience with animals, not just on a family house or far, but in a shelter environment, please include this in your application
