    Job Summary:

    United Way of King County’s Free Tax Preparation Campaign helps low- to moderate-income families access life-changing anti-poverty programs. So far in 2025, the campaign has served over 13,000 clients, benefiting more than 29,000 community members and returning more than $16 million to the community. Building on this success, United Way aims to expand its impact by hiring up to 28 Tax Site Managers.

    As a Tax Site Manager, you will lead the daily operations of one or more in-person tax sites, committing to at least two shifts per week.

    This is a unique opportunity to lead, problem-solve, and make a direct impact on economic stability for thousands of families in King County.

    Position Details

    This position is a time-limited role broken into two overlapping phases:

    Phase 1: Train volunteers (Nov. 15 – Jan. 25)

    1. Attend in-person Tax Site Manager Training, Sat. Nov. 15 & Sun. Nov. 16
    2. Complete remote training & attain advanced-level tax law certification by Dec. 5
    3. Observe first weekend of in-person volunteer training at North Seattle College, Sat. Dec. 6 & Sun. Dec. 7 (early arrival required to help set up & prepare classrooms)
    4. Assist with at least two additional training weekends (Sat + Sun) between Dec. 13–14 and Jan. 3–18
    5. Lead/co-lead tax site orientations, Jan. 20–25

    Phase 2: Manage your tax site(s) (Jan. 20 – Apr. 30)

    1. Oversee daily operations of one or more in-person tax site(s) at least two shifts each week between Jan. 20 – Apr. 19
      • Daytime, evening, and weekend shifts are available. Weekday shifts are typically 5-6 hours, and weekend shifts are typically 6-8 hours.
    2. Provide coordination, organization, and supervision for all stages of tax preparation.
    3. Ensure ongoing compliance with IRS Quality Site Requirements (QSRs).

    Important

    • A cover letter is required for consideration. Please include your availability between Nov. 15, 2025 and Apr. 30, 2026 in your cover letter.
    • This is a seasonal, in-person job requiring at least 20 hours/week between Nov. 15, 2025 – Apr. 30, 2026. Please review the required dates and schedule below carefully before applying.

    Required Training & Preparation

    • Tax Site Manager Training (in-person): Sat. Nov. 15 & Sun. Nov. 16
    • Volunteer Training Weekends (in-person):
      • Sat. Dec. 6 & Sun. Dec. 7 (required)
      • At least two additional weekends (Sat + Sun) between Dec. 13–14 and Jan. 3–18
    • Self-paced training & virtual team collaboration: Up to 10 hours/week between Nov. 16 – Dec. 5

    Tax Season Commitments

    • Commit to at least two in-person shifts per week from Jan. 20 – Apr. 19 (20 hours/week minimum)
    • Due to the nature and timeline of the project, availability between Jan. 20 – Apr. 19 will be a key factor in candidate selection. Please disclose any known scheduling conflicts in your application materials.

    Compensation:

    • The compensation for this position is $26.36per hour.

    Essential Duties:

    • Coordinate and oversee tax preparation services.
    • Guide and mentor volunteers, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
    • Provide direct support to both clients and volunteers by answering tax-related questions, resolving issues, and escalating challenges when necessary.
    • Supervise preparation and quality review of tax returns.
    • Support, coach, and motivate volunteers to meet weekly goals.
    • Deliver excellent client service by resolving issues and ensuring clients receive all eligible services.
    • Timely E-filing of returns and timely follow-up on e-file rejections.
    • Submit weekly reports and communicate regularly with Tax Campaign staff.
    • Assist with volunteer training, certification, and troubleshooting (e.g., case management systems, technical issues).

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Strong customer service experience, especially working with low-income communities.
    • Proven ability to manage and support volunteers in fast-paced, dynamic settings.
    • Flexibility, adaptability, and excellent attention to detail.
    • Strong communication skills (in-person, email, and virtual platforms such as MS Teams).
    • Comfort with technology; ability to coach others and troubleshoot issues.
    • Commitment to community service and economic justice, with demonstrated experience working in diverse communities.
    • Ability to work in community spaces with strict security protocols (e.g., locked-door policies)
    • Ability to meet frequent deadlines and time-sensitive work; extensive use of computers required.
    • Demonstrated understanding of social and racial justice and equity, with a proven commitment to apply racial and economic justice lenses in both personal and workplace contexts.
    • Lived experience and/or demonstrated professional skills working within a diverse work environment.

    Education and/or Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Customer service and team management experience.
    • Commitment to confidentiality and IRS tax law compliance.
    • Willingness to complete IRS VITA Advanced certification (training provided).

    Preferred:

    • Experience in free tax preparation programs or knowledge of tax law.
    • Experience supervising or supporting volunteers.
    • Multilingual skills—priority languages include Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Tagalog, and Amharic.
    • Willingness to attain additional VITA certifications (Military, Foreign Student, etc.)
