Mobilization for Justice, Inc. (MFJ), a non-profit legal services organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers, is seeking a supervising attorney for its Homeownership Preservation Practice. The position is full time and is based out of our Manhattan office. The attorney will be part of a team that provides free legal advice and representation to homeowners and their heirs with regard to homes and co-ops in all five boroughs, in the areas of foreclosure defense, deed theft, predatory lending, property tax issues, and mortgage servicing issues; works in coalition with advocacy groups on city?and state- policy issues and legislation; provides testimony on homeownership-related issues; conducts trainings for lawyers, housing counselors, and homeowners; and communicates with elected officials and the media.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Oversee work of attorneys whose work includes client intake, legal research and writing, and litigation of all phases of cases, including settlement conferences, motions, trials, and appeals.
• Handle an abbreviated docket of cases, as time permits.
• Represent MFJ at meetings with coalition members, funders, court officials, government entities, etc.
• Ensure a program of community outreach and training of lawyers, community groups and homeowners on the rights of homeowners in foreclosure.
• Work with the Director of Litigation for Economic Justice to identify issues for impact or class action litigation or policy initiatives, including white papers and legislative advocacy campaigns and to supervise effectuation of any such effort.
• Mentor and promote professional development of the staff.
• Work with the management team to develop and ensure compliance with team and office-wide policies and procedures.
• Work with the management team to meet general team needs, including preparing training materials, contract reporting and compliance, fundraising and other administrative tasks.
Requirements:
• Admission to the NYS Bar.
• Demonstrated commitment to public service.

• Excellent research, writing, and editing skills.
• Ability to balance competing supervisory, administrative, and advocacy tasks.
Preferences:
• Experience with and understanding of mortgage products and loss mitigation options.
• Experience litigating foreclosure actions, deed theft cases, and state and federal consumer and homeowner protection statutes.
• Prior supervisory experience.
• Fluency in Spanish, a Chinese dialect, or another language spoken by immigrant populations in NYC.

Salary: The salary range for this position is $130,582.14 to $159,629.79.
