    Rising Hope Mission Church serves individuals experiencing homelessness along the Route One Corridor in Fairfax County. Through various programs, including the Hypothermia Program, Rising Hope provides essential services to our most vulnerable neighbors, offering shelter, case management, and resources to help individuals achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

    Position Overview

    The Residential Support Staff (RSS) plays a critical role in providing overnight supervision and support for guests in the Hypothermia Prevention Program. This program ensures individuals experiencing homelessness have a safe place to stay during the winter months, protecting them from extreme cold and weather-related health risks. The RSS staff is responsible for ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of guests, utilizing trauma-informed care practices to connect guests with necessary services and resources. The RSS staff reports directly to the Hypothermia Coordinator.

    This position reports to the Hypothermia Coordinator.

    This position is seasonal from November 15 through April 1. RSS staff will collaborate closely with volunteers and other staff members to ensure the smooth operation of the Hypothermia Program.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Maintain a culture that exemplifies Rising Hope’s core tenets of creating a loving and inclusive environment for all persons.
    • Exemplify the standards necessary to lead within a faith community environment.
    • Overnight Supervision: Ensure the safety and security of guests, staff, and volunteers by conducting routine checks throughout the building.
    • Security and Intake: Perform bag checks upon guest arrival, complete intake procedures, and distribute necessary overnight supplies.
    • Emergency Response: Respond to emergencies promptly, following Rising Hope’s protocols to address situations effectively.
    • Collaboration with Volunteers: Work alongside volunteers to create a supportive environment for guests.
    • Guest Support: Direct guests to case management services and connect them to additional resources or referrals as needed.
    • Program Maintenance: Assist with maintaining a clean and organized shelter space, including tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and general upkeep.
    • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain guest paperwork including intake, code of conduct, medication forms, check-out form, and space check logs.
    • Positive Interactions: Promote positive relationships and foster a supportive atmosphere for guests.
    • Regular Updates: Participate in regular check-ins with the Hypothermia Coordinator and provide updates on guest progress and needs.

    Work Hours

    • Schedule: November 1 through April 1
    • Shift Times: Overnights: 6:30 PM - 1:00 AM & 12:30 AM - 7:00 AM; Shifts available 7 days a week

    Skills and Qualifications

    • Previous experience in social services, shelter programs, or related fields preferred.
    • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and address the complex needs of individuals experiencing homelessness.
    • Strong communication skills and the ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy and professionalism.
    • Knowledge of trauma-informed care practices.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, including coordinating with volunteers and other staff members.
    • Flexibility to work evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.
    • Familiarity with county program software (FBM, HMIS) or willingness to learn.
