    Title: Staff Accountant

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Reports to: Director of Finance and Administration

    Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA with hybrid flexibility after 12 months

    Position Summary

    The Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the accounting operations of Somerville Community Corporation (SCC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to affordable housing development, economic opportunity, and resident services. This position assists with daily accounting tasks such as accounts payable/receivable processing, general ledger entries, bank reconciliations, the monthly close, and audit preparation. The Staff Accountant will work closely with the finance team to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting that supports SCC’s mission and compliance with funder, audit, and regulatory requirements.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

      • Manage the entire lifecycle of accounts payable including setting up vendors, processing invoices, preparing bill payments, and expense reimbursements.
      • Perform monthly bank, credit card, and accounts payable account reconciliations.
      • Prepare journal entries and maintain supporting documentation in accordance with GAAP.
      • Reconcile CIP for multiple projects against project requisitions.
      • Assist with month-end and year-end closings, including the creation of schedules necessary for the audit.
      • Maintain organized electronic files of financial records for ongoing organizational and/or audit readiness.
      • Generate reports such as restricted grant expenditures, funder reports, and job ledgers.
      • Support financial data entry, imports/exports, and reports within Sage 50.
      • Assist with special projects such as construction project cost analysis and 1099 filings.
      • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and adhere to internal controls and financial policies.
      • Additional duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance preferred; Business related degree considered
      • 2+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or real estate/housing context.
      • Familiarity with GAAP principles and accounting software (Sage 50 preferred).
      • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, time management, and organizational skills.
      • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and ability to work across multiple systems and files.
      • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment with a high degree of integrity.
