JOB SUMMARY
The Finance Director is a member of the ACLU-VA Finance Team and ensures that the organization has the financial talent, structures, and resources necessary to achieve its vision. Reporting to and collaborating with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), this role will manage the organization’s daily financial activities to ensure accuracy and compliance with the organization’s accounting polices, generally accepted accounting standards, and, The Finance Director ensures efficiency and accuracy around the organization's critical financial needs. The Director also participates in setting organizational financial goals and priorities, strategic planning, developing and managing the organization's budget, and assisting the development team in preparing grants proposals to carry out the ACLU-VA mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Finance Management & Compliance
- Lead the annual operating budget development process in consultation with the CFO;
- Ensure accurate day-to-day finance activities and monthly reconciliations of revenue and expenses, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, prepaid entries and monthly and year-end close.;
- Maintain confidentiality of financial data, projections, strategic plans, brainstorming, and reports;
- Forecast revenues and develop financial models in consultation with the Chief Financial Officer and the Chief of Development;
- Work with the Development team to manage grant and donation revenue and ensure grant agreement compliance;
- Collaborates with the CFO and finance team to develop strategies to assess, manage, and minimize any financial risks and to maximize financial opportunities;
- Provide monthly budget reports to team leaders and conduct meetings as needed;
- Work with the Board finance committee to carry out its charge and to ensure that the Board of Directors is empowered and engaged in fulfilling its fiduciary obligations concerning financial oversight;
- Develop and implement efficient and thorough internal processes for the collection of useful financial information and other metrics, regularly report to the Chief Financial Officer and Board finance committee on cash flow and any outstanding liabilities, and create and maintain mid-to-long-term financial models for making management decisions;
- Supervise the work of other finance staff and contractors on all accounting and reconciliation tasks;
- Maintain overall financial oversight for accounts payable, payroll journal entries, and credit card systems;
- Maintain the accounting policies manual and communication with the board finance committee on updates;
- Lead the annual financial audit and ensure compliance with the ACLU-VA accounting procedures and policies manual;
- Develop and update the organization’s financial policies and procedures as necessary;
- Understand what it means to be an affiliate of the National ACLU, oversee compliance with national financial management rules and grant reporting requirements, and develop a collaborative relationship with people filling similar roles in other affiliates and with appropriate national staff.
- Maintain communications with the accounting services partner quarterly to understand and implement feedback; and
- Responsible for compliance for all corporate registrations and business property taxes;
- Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, developing, managing and supervising all ACLU-VA finance staff including developing work plans, managing difficult personnel situations, facilitating a positive team culture, and holding staff accountable.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
- Strong understanding of GAAP and not-for-profit accounting principals.
- Prior experience managing a team is strongly preferred.
- At least 5 years of nonprofit accounting experience
- Proficiency with technology including financial ERP systems and Microsoft Excel
- Strong financial management skills, including experience in budget planning and implementation, revenue forecasting, financial planning, and modeling, proficiency in reading and analyzing financial statements, and knowledge of non-profit accounting practices.
- Experience exercising discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information such as donor records, financial statements, and personnel records.
- Willingness and availability to work beyond the normal workday, on weekends, and more than 40 hours a week as necessary.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- CPA license
- Experience developing and implementing a change management plan for a growing organization.
- Interest in team culture building
EQUIPMENT USED
SALARY RANGE: The salary range for this position is $82,200 to $115,000, with a midpoint of $98,750. Compensation offers will generally be somewhere between the starting point and the midpoint of the range and are based on a candidate's specific experience and current market factors at the time of the offer. To preserve the opportunity for advancement, we do not typically hire above the midpoint of the range.

This position will require a presence in the downtown Richmond office. All ACLU-VA staff members must reside within Virginia or within a 150-mile radius of our downtown Richmond office.
