Church Sexton (Caretaker)

Saint Stephen’s Church in Providence seeks a reliable and trustworthy part-time Sexton (Caretaker) to assist with building maintenance, care, and basic upkeep.

Schedule:

8–10 hours per week, primarily on Sundays. Additional hours may be available for custodial/janitorial work (currently contracted out).

Responsibilities:

Sundays:

• Open the church (7:00 AM)
• Clear sidewalks, entrances, grounds as needed (snow/ice, leaves, litter)
• Set up/clean up for coffee hour
• Perform light cleaning and minor upkeep, including:
  • Refreshing restrooms (spot-cleaning, restocking soap and paper products)
  • Tidying pews and common areas
  • Replacing light bulbs

Weekly (e.g., Thursdays):

• Empty trash/recycling and take barrels out/in for collection

As Needed:

• Set up for special events (including moving tables and chairs)
• Assist with moving large or heavy items
• Perform minor repairs
• Monitor cleaning supply inventory and notify when restocking is needed
• Report safety concerns or maintenance issues beyond the scope of the role
• Light landscape/gardening

Qualifications:

• Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds; perform physical tasks
• Prior experience in custodial work, facilities maintenance, or a similar role
• English language proficiency
• Background check and SafeChurch training/certification are mandatory
