    Descripción

    MakeHaven is seeking an instructor to lead a cohort of 6-8 high school students in a hands-on summer program focused on fabrication, manufacturing, and technical career exploration.

    This program introduces students to practical technical skills through real projects and exposure to local industry. Students will work with tools, materials, and fabrication processes while learning how technical work environments operate.

    We are looking for someone who enjoys building things, solving problems, and helping others gain confidence working with tools.

    Program Dates

    Monday, June 29 through August 14 (No Class July 3rd)

    Schedule

    Monday–Friday

    8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

    Fridays are reserved for industry field trips organized with the New Haven Chamber of Commerce.

    Program Overview

    Students will rotate through several areas of fabrication and manufacturing, including:

    • woodworking
    • metalworking and welding
    • electronics and sensors
    • CNC and digital fabrication
    • plastics manufacturing processes

    Throughout the program students complete hands-on projects including:

    • a woodworking tool tote
    • a welded metal plant stand with a CNC-cut nameplate
    • electronics and sensing exercises
    • plastics forming and injection molding activities

    The program concludes with a capstone project in which students design and build a manufacturing jig used for repeatable fabrication tasks. Students will present their work at the end of the program.

    Responsibilities

    The instructor will guide students through daily activities and projects while maintaining a

    safe and supportive shop environment.

    • leading daily hands-on instruction
    • supervising student work in the shop
    • demonstrating tools and fabrication techniques
    • reinforcing safe tool use and good shop practices
    • helping students troubleshoot and problem-solve during projects
    • supporting students in documenting and presenting their work

    A program coordinator employed by the school will handle student logistics and supervision. The instructor’s role is technical instruction and mentorship.

    Desired Background

    We welcome applicants with experience in areas such as:

    • fabrication or manufacturing
    • woodworking or metalworking
    • welding or machining
    • electronics or technical systems
    • maker education or industrial arts

    Prior teaching experience is highly valued but not required.

    We are especially interested in candidates who:

    • enjoy working with their hands
    • are patient and encouraging with beginners
    • take safety seriously in shop environments
    • like explaining how things work

    Compensation

    Competitive hourly rate, $45–$60 per hour depending on experience.
