    PART TIME, HOURLY, JOB DESCRIPTION

    ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

    The mission of Oakland Kids First (OKF) is to increase youth voice, leadership, and power to create engaging and equitable public schools where all students learn and achieve. Founded in 1996 by a multi-racial coalition of youth serving agencies, Oakland Kids First uses youth leadership development, service provision, and youth organizing to provide youth with the skills and opportunities to both navigate and transform systems.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Under the supervision of the Extended Day Program Manager, After School Academic Mentor supports student learning as part of Castlemont High School’s after-school program. Mentor provides academic assistance and tutoring in core subject areas, while also offering administrative support with attendance and data entry. The job requires in person work at, which is located at 8601 MacArthur Blvd Bldg. Oakland, CA 94605. This position is part time and requires availability Mon, Tues, Thurs, between the hours of 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM and Wednesday from 2-5pm.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintain accurate records of student progress and program participation
    • Work with Castlemont teachers and staff to recruit students for tutoring
    • Tutor and coach students to complete homework and research assignments in various academic subjects, including mathematics, English, science, and electives
    • Facilitate and plan academic skill-building activities based on students' skill level.
    • Foster productive relationships with students to encourage continuous attendance
    • Maintain collaborative working relationships with teachers, staff, families, and students
    • Promote a safe and positive classroom environment
    • Supervise after school academic mentoring program spaces to ensure student safety at all times
    • Maintain positive, appropriate, professional and student-friendly speech, behavior and attire
    • Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facilities and equipment
    • Communicate regularly with the Extended Day Program Manager
    • Participate in professional development activities with extended day staff and OKF staff
    • Attend and participate in Castlemont Community Initiative bi-weekly staff meetings
    • Comply with all school district policies and procedures, and meet deadlines
    • Support Site Coordinator with entry and submitting attendance on a timely manner
    • Perform other related duties as assigned

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Position responsibilities in this role must follow OUSD district requirements
    • An offer of employment is contingent on passing a criminal background screening and TB test every few years. All employees must also complete training in Professional Boundaries, mandatory reporting, and sexual harassment prior to beginning work with youth
    • 48 college semester units or passage of the OUSD Instructional Aide examination
    • Demonstrates ability to ​effectively tutor and coach high school aged students in various academic subjects
    • Punctual and reliable
    • Must be able to perform basic administrative tasks and keep detailed records
    • Must be able to work 3-4 days a week during after school hours; typically 3:30-6pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and 2-5pm on Wednesday and commit to a full academic school year required for the position
    • Must have a general knowledge base of core high school subjects
    • Must possess strong classroom and behavioral management skills
    • Must be able to communicate openly in a professional manner with students, parents, community partners, and after-school and school day-staff
    • Must maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a high degree of integrity
    • Ability to lift 20 lbs repeatedly, and engage in physical activities such as active icebreakers, carrying snacks/drinks, and walking across campus to multiple youth program spaces
    • Willing to work some evenings and weekends

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • One year of paid professional experience in academic advising, mentoring, and/or tutoring high school youth
    • Understanding of positive youth development and social justice principles and practices
    • Can effectively work in collaborative teams
    • Preferred for staff to have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and access to a car
    • Ability to speak Spanish or Mam in addition to English preferred
    • People of color, LGBTQ people, and those whose identities are reflective of the youth we serve in programs are encouraged to apply

    COMPENSATION:

    • Position is non-exempt and hourly with a starting hourly wage range between $31.44 -$33.67, depending on experience and qualifications
    • Part time employees under 25 hours are ineligible for health/dental benefits; this position will receive a prorated wellness stipend on a quarterly basis.
    • Schedule operates on a school year calendar and employee must be available between August 11, 2025 - May 31, 2026
    • Ergonomic office furniture, laptop, software and tech accessories are provided for work
    • Paid time off for holidays, sick time, and restoration weeks aligned with OUSD breaks
    • Agency financial support to attend professional development and trainings that align with professional development plans and annual performance reviews is available to all staff
