    Legal Services for Maine Elders

    Staff Attorney

LSE is a statewide nonprofit organization that has been protecting the rights of older Mainers since 1974. Our mission is to provide free, high-quality legal services to people age 60 and older when their basic human needs are at stake.

LSE is accepting applications for a full-time Staff Attorney position. Staff attorneys work with considerable independence in administrative and court proceedings, preparing written filings, leading client meetings, and connecting clients to resources to address the underlying cause of their legal issues.

Case work involves a wide range of areas of law including evictions, benefits eligibility, financial exploitation, capacity and self-determination, and protection from abuse or harassment. Staff Attorneys have dynamic schedules that involve regular travel and extensive phone communication.

All applicants must be living in Maine or planning to live in Maine. The Staff Attorney may work remotely from a home office located in Maine, from an LSE office if one is nearby, or under a hybrid arrangement. Applicants available to work in Central Maine are especially encouraged to apply, but any attorney based in Maine with a strong interest in LSE will be considered.

Candidates must be licensed to practice in Maine or sitting for the next available bar exam. Candidates must also have a strong interest in, and/or experience with, civil litigation and a commitment to working with and helping older people.

The Staff Attorney will receive ongoing professional training and support and will work as part of a team of Staff Attorneys with varying levels of experience. We expect that most applicants will have between 0 and 5 years of experience, though we will consider applications from interested candidates at other experience levels.

LSE is committed to ensuring that all older people in Maine – of any class, race, sex, background, orientation, or identity -- are secure in meeting their basic needs, including housing, health care, nutrition, community, safety, and freedom from exploitation and oppression. As part of that commitment, LSE works to create and maintain a workforce and culture that reflects the diversity of our state.

The salary range for this position is $72,000 to $75,000, depending on relevant experience. LSE offers a collegial and inclusive work environment and an excellent benefits package. Interviews begin April 20, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. Please provide a cover letter, resume, and references by email to mlachapelle@mainelse.org.
