    Organizational Overview

    Comunidades focuses on amplifying Latina/o and immigrant voices in environmental and social justice issues throughout the Columbia River Gorge. Our mission is to create systemic change through the civic engagement of BIPOC communities. We are a Latina/o led organization that is quickly growing.

    Founded in 2018 by Latina/o activists, parents, educators, and other involved residents of the Gorge, Comunidades addresses the need for a Latina/o -led environmental and social justice organization.

    Organizational Mission: The mission of Comunidades is to amplify Latina/o voices for environmental and social justice. We are dedicated to changing the infrastructures of power and inequality that affect our communities, as well as empowering people through civic engagement in Latino and immigrant communities whose voices would otherwise be limited and disenfranchised.

    Core Programs

    • Campaigns for Social and Environmental Justice: We advance social and environmental justice causes in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington and Oregon, addressing issues like pesticides, affordable housing, toxic pollution, climate change, and community inequality.
    • Educational Training: We provide leadership development and public participation training tailored to la comunidad Latina.
    • Youth Mentorship: We offer mentorship opportunities that develop skills and knowledge about community organizing, social and environmental justice issues.

    Job Summary

    The Community Organizer in Environmental Justice will build grassroots power by cultivating deep relationships with residents, local leaders, and partner organizations. This role focuses on community-led solutions to environmental injustice, with an emphasis on leadership development, strategic campaigning, and policy advocacy. The ideal candidate is passionate about environmental justice, has experience with grassroots organizing, and is committed to systemic change by uplifting the voices and leadership of frontline communities.

    Key Responsibilities

    Community Engagement

    • Build and maintain relationships with community members, leaders, and partner organizations to identify community needs and priorities.

    Campaigns & Advocacy

    • Work closely with the team to design and implement community-driven campaigns focused on environmental and social justice.
    • Mobilize community members around strategic actions and policy change.
    • Represent community voices in meetings with local officials and decision-makers.

    Event & Volunteer Coordination

    • Plan and facilitate community meetings, workshops, and public forums.
    • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to support community initiatives and campaigns
    • Ensure events foster collaboration and civic participation and align with campaign goals.

    Strategic Communications

    • Develop messaging and content to maintain clear communication with stakeholders through various channels, including social media, newsletters, and public presentations

    Evaluation & Organizational Collaboration

    • Collect and analyze data to assess community needs and program impact.
    • Contribute to reports, funding proposals, and internal learning processes.
    • Work collaboratively across the organization and with external partners to advance shared goals.

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 2 years of experience in community organizing, advocacy, or related work
    • Full professional fluency in Spanish and English (speaking, reading, and writing)
    • Demonstrated commitment to social and environmental justice principles
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Knowledge of local community issues and social justice principles.
    • Strong relationship-building skills with diverse communities.
    • Demonstrated project management and organizational abilities
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Proficiency with digital communication tools, social media, and Microsoft Office suite
    • Valid driver's license and car insurance as required by law
    • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Knowledge of environmental justice issues affecting Latino communities
    • Experience working in the Columbia River Gorge region
    • Background in campaign development and implementation
