Supervising Attorney, Pro Bono Litigation Corps

The Supervising Attorney, Pro Bono Litigation Corps will help lead and manage litigation challenging unlawful actions by the federal government in partnership with other organizations and pro bono attorneys nationwide. The ideal candidate will have strong litigation experience, a deep commitment to public interest law, and a talent for supervising and mentoring lawyers in a collaborative, fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Specific Job Responsibilities include:

Litigation & Strategy

• Identify and evaluate opportunities for affirmative litigation or strategic intervention (e.g., amicus work) aligned with L4GG’s mission.
• Serve as lead or co-counsel in federal, administrative, and/or state court proceedings, including development of legal theories, case strategy, pleadings, and appeals.
• Provide strategic oversight and quality control across L4GG’s litigation portfolio, including matters managed in collaboration with pro bono partners.
• Conduct legal research, draft and review briefs and other documents, and handle all aspects of pending litigation including depositions, motion practice, and trial preparation.

Pro Bono Supervision & Coordination

• Train and support pro bono attorneys as needed to ensure the quality of all legal services provided to L4GG clients.
• Supervise case work and coordinate case development with external partners.
• Develop training materials to support pro bono teams.
• Provide mentorship and feedback to junior attorneys and other volunteers.

Program Development & Collaboration

• Work with internal teams to conceptualize and launch new pro bono litigation initiatives that align with community needs and organizational priorities.
• Cultivate relationships with nonprofit partners, legal advocacy coalitions, and community groups to identify emerging legal issues and advocacy opportunities.
• Collaborate with the communications team to publicize litigation efforts, client stories, and impact.

Compliance, Evaluation, and Reporting

• Ensure compliance with ethical standards, professional responsibility requirements, and L4GG’s policies on client representation and conflict checks.
• Track case progress, outcomes, metrics, and impact for internal assessment and external reporting.
• Support funder and board reporting, including written summaries of impact and programmatic achievements.

Qualifications - Required

• J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Minimum 8-10 years of litigation experience, ideally with exposure to advocating for or opposing positions taken by federal or state governments, or navigating federal regulatory procedures on behalf of clients.
• Knowledge of legal principles relevant to litigation or regulatory advocacy involving federal or state governments. Familiarity with the Administrative Procedure Act is preferred.
• Experience initiating affirmative litigation in state or federal court, including identifying legal theories, cultivating client relationships, and assembling supporting factual records.
• Strong candidates will bring experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Litigating in state or federal court, including claim investigation, legal research, drafting pleadings and briefs, and engaging in hearings or oral arguments
  • Navigating the federal regulatory process through litigation, rulemaking, or administrative advocacy
  • Building client relationships and cultivating coalition partnerships
• Demonstrated experience supervising attorneys or legal teams.
• Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
• Experience with impact litigation, public interest law, or civil rights advocacy strongly preferred.
• Excellent organization and time management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a remote, tech-forward team environment.
• Passion for L4GG’s mission and a commitment to justice and equity.
• Proficiency with G-Suite, including Google Docs, Sheets, and Share Drives.
• Access to a quiet workspace with high-speed internet and ability to participate in video conferences.

Qualifications - Preferred:

• Experience in one or more of the following areas: constitutional law, civil rights, human rights, government accountability, voting rights, environmental law, administrative law.
• Familiarity with the role of litigation in advancing policy change.
• Experience partnering with pro bono counsel and nonprofit legal organizations.
• Experience with Asana, Slack, Airtable, and other remote collaboration tools.
