    JOB TITLE: ERC/Litigation Assistant

    REPORTS TO: Outreach, Education, and Clinical Services Director

    STATUS: Non-Exempt, Full-Time (40 hours/week)

    THE ORGANIZATION

    The Learning Rights Law Center (LRLC) is a non-profit organization that provides direct legal services to students who are not receiving an equitable public education, runs an Education Rights Clinic for broad legal consultation support, and engages in a variety of community training and outreach efforts to further the organization’s mission and goals. LRLC is located near downtown Los Angeles, but is presently functioning in a hybrid capacity. The organization currently focuses its efforts on the most vulnerable low-income K-12 students in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties.

    MISSION

    Learning Rights Law Center fights to achieve education equity for underserved families in Los Angeles and surrounding counties. We provide free and low-cost legal representation, advice, advocacy and training to families and communities whose children, as a consequence of disability or discrimination, have been denied equal access to a public education.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    LRLC utilizes the assistance of the Education Rights Clinic (“ERC”) to fulfill its mission. The position entails working with the Outreach, Education and Clinical Services Director, other ERC Coordinators, staff attorneys, volunteers, and law clerks to support the daily activities of the ERC and to provide critical administrative support to our litigation team. This includes direct client contact, administrative duties, coordination, and file and data management.

    You’ll work directly with experienced attorneys, contribute to meaningful cases, and build practical skills that will serve you throughout your career. You’ll gain hands-on experience, mentorship from passionate attorneys and advocates, a deeper understanding of legal advocacy in the nonprofit sector, and a chance to contribute to positive change in vulnerable communities. This position is non-exempt and full time and provides a benefit package. This position will require in-person work.

    The starting rate for the ERC/Litigation Assistant position is $21.38 per hour.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bilingual English/Spanish (both written and spoken) required;
    • Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) in-person, on a schedule that includes up to 2 Saturdays per month;
    • Self-motivated leader who can work independently as well as part of teams
    • Strong interpersonal skills;
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
    • Ability to multitask, tackle problems as they arise and work with deadlines;
    • Experience working with parents and/or minority communities, students with disabilities, and other disenfranchised communities;
    • Attention to cultural competence with family and community engagement;
    • Relevant professional experience;
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
    • Ability to manage sensitive information in a confidential manner;
    • Motivated to gain exposure to client advocacy and nonprofit legal work;
    • Promote a positive work environment and culture at LRLC; and
    • Must have a vehicle and insurance and be able to travel and transport materials to community intake events outside LRLC office.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    Under Education Rights Clinic:

      • Coordinate, organizing and staff LRLC’s community-based legal clinics ;
      • Set up legal clinic physical space (light furniture moving, laptop setup);
      • Conduct intake eligibility screenings and schedule intake appointments over the phone and in person;
      • Assist with intake records ;
      • Process paper records, including scanning, digital filing, and communicating with staff as needed;
      • Provide oral Spanish/English interpretation and translation as needed;
      • Maintain and update ERC resources;
      • Collaborate with staff; and
      • Other support as needed

    Under Litigation department:

    • Manage and organize legal document digital filing system;
    • Scan, copy, and file client records and documentary evidence;
    • Collaborate with staff attorneys on active education law cases;
    • Develop and maintain filing and administrative systems;
    • Draft and prepare correspondence;
    • Support legal advocacy, trial preparation and administrative tasks;
      • Provide other administrative and legal support as needed.
