About the Peggy Browning Fund
Peggy Browning Fund (PBF) is a nonprofit organization established in memory of Margaret A. Browning, a prominent labor attorney and first union-side labor lawyer appointed to the National Labor Relations Board. PBF’s mission is to empower the next generation of law students to become advocates for workplace justice.
Through summer fellowships, an annual National Law Students Workers' Rights Conference (NLSWRC), and networking opportunities, PBF provides diverse, challenging work and educational experiences in workers' rights. Its goal is to increase students' understanding of the current issues facing workers, as well as promote students' entry into the practice of public interest labor law.
PBF’s flagship program, funded summer Fellowships, provides stipends to law students who dedicate their summer to advancing the cause of workers’ rights by working for labor unions, worker centers, labor-related not-for-profit organizations, union-side law firms and other nonprofit organizations. It is a ten-week summer fellowship and is available to continuing law students. Worker-side labor law educational experiences are also available to students, Fellows and non-Fellows alike, at PBF’s annual NLSWRC. The two-day event hosts multiple substantive workshops, networking breakout opportunities, plenary sessions, and a keynote address. Finally, PBF partners with law schools and student organizations to bring worker-side labor law to campuses nationwide through its Regional Workshops and Fellowship “info sessions.”
The Peggy Browning Fund is the premier national union-side labor law fellowship program. From an initial class of 10-students in 1998, PBF has awarded 1,435 Fellowships. 3,818 students have attended PBF’s NLSWRC and over 3,600 students have attended PBF’s Regional Workshops. It has worked with over 136 organizations, from unions, to union-side law firms, to nonprofits and workers’ centers and had Fellows from over 143 of the 199 ABA accredited law schools.
Our Board of Directors consists mainly of labor and employment rights lawyers from across the United States who are devoted to nurturing the labor bar by introducing high achieving law students from diverse backgrounds who are interested in representing American workers.
