    Descripción

    The Domestic Violence Project at the Urban Justice Center seeks a full-time Supervising Attorney, Immigration Law with 5-10 years of experience in immigration law to join a passionate team of attorneys and advocates to help survivors of intimate partner violence, and their children gain safety, security, and independence. The Attorney will help provide supervision of legal staff and lead community-based outreach and trainings. The Attorney will also provide legal representation and advocacy on immigration matters including U and T visas, SIJS, adjustment of status, VAWA Self-Petitions, Battered Spouse Waivers, and naturalizations. The ideal candidate has experience managing a team, thrives working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, is comfortable with public speaking, and has a passion for helping to build partnerships and community.

    About DVP

    The Domestic Violence Project (DVP)’s mission is to help survivors of intimate partner violence, and their children live free of violence and abuse, marshaling the combination of legal and advocacy services necessary to secure justice and a dignified quality of life. We consider intimate partner violence – regardless of gender, sexual identity, religion, immigration, or other status – to be a human rights violation. We serve an average of 1,600 survivors annually across all five boroughs of NYC through our comprehensive direct services (legal representation in family law and immigration matters, holistic case management, and empowerment groups), plus an additional 2,000+ reached through community outreach, education, and clinics.

    Job Responsibilities

    The Supervising Immigration Attorney reports to the Director of Legal Services and is responsible for the following:

    • Supervise a team of full-time immigration attorneys, fellows, interns, and pro bono attorneys.
    • Organize internal trainings and facilitate external training opportunities for staff.
    • Zealously represent survivors in their immigration matters.
    • Collaborate with our entire DVP program to assist clients and increase effectiveness of programming.
    • Collaborate with DVP’s Management’s team to participate in the development of the legal department’s vision and priorities and then working to execute those plans.
    • Build and strengthen organizational relationships and communications with other organizations.
    • Conduct outreach, education, and know-your-rights events throughout NYC and remotely.
    • Manage the professional development and mentoring of staff, including identifying opportunities to support the growth and development of their legal skills.
    • Maintain records, statistics and funding requirements as needed
    • All other tasks as assigned by the Director of Legal of Services of survivors of intimate partner violence

    Requirements and Qualifications

    • Admission to a state bar is mandatory.
    • 5-10 years of immigration experience with at least two years as a supervisor. Must have previous experience training, supervising, or mentoring attorneys or legal interns.
    • Knowledge and understanding of intimate partner violence and trauma.
    • Deep experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds and lifestyles.
    • Ability to work with clients in a sensitive and trauma-informed manner.
    • Proven project and time management skills. Must be able to manage multiple projects at once and manage competing priorities. Must have strong organizational and administrative skills.
    • Must be comfortable providing and receiving feedback and critique in a constructive manner.
    • Able to problem solve and think creatively to find solutions.
    • Able to respond to the legal needs of immigrant survivors on an emergency and/or immediate basis.
    • Exceptional interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills and the ability to apply these skills in diverse situations.
    • Aptitude for intense and thorough advocacy.
    • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work as a team member.
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
    • Interest and proclivity in working within a multi-disciplinary framework.
    • Must be able to travel between boroughs.
    • Able to work evenings if necessary.
