Workforce Readiness Instructor: Short-Term Contract Position

Contract Overview

CitySeed’s mission is to engage the community in growing an equitable local food system that promotes economic development, community development, and sustainable agriculture. Our Sanctuary Kitchen social enterprise partners with new residents of Greater New Haven to build economic opportunity and intercultural understanding through food, including a Culinary Training Program that prepares aspiring chefs for culinary careers. The 12-week Culinary Training Program offers new residents the opportunity to build a foundation for a successful culinary career through hands-on instruction in a classroom setting. Participants will enhance their culinary skills, develop English language proficiency with a focus on culinary vocabulary, improve professional skills and job readiness, and receive job placement support to help them transition confidently into the culinary workforce. The Workforce Readiness Instructor provides instruction for two hours per week, during two 12-week sessions per year (Winter-Spring and Summer-Fall), for a cohort of twelve students per session.

Responsibilities

• Prepare weekly lessons based on the Sanctuary Kitchen Workforce Development curriculum, including:
  • Appropriate communication style, dress code, customer service expectations, and professional behavior in the culinary workspace
  • Range of staffing roles in a culinary environment
  • Back of the House (BOH) and Front of the House (FOH) service demands
  • Resume development
  • Professional email usage
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Approaches to job searching
  • Google Suite, including Gmail and Google calendar
  • Facilitate engaging classroom discussions
  • Adapt instructional materials as needed to meet individual and group learning needs
  • Submit prepared lesson plans one week prior to each training session
  • Troubleshoot communication difficulties with positive approaches
  • Prepare students for periodic testing and reviews
  • Guide trainees in identifying positions that align with their strengths and career goals
  • Gather student feedback to facilitate program improvement

Required Qualifications

• Teaching experience
• Comfort speaking with persons who are not fluent in English
• Strong and engaging interpersonal skills
• Excellent time management and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience with adults who are learning English
• Teaching certification
• Lived experience and/or direct experience working with new residents

Compensations

This is a short-term contract position, not eligible for benefits or tax withholding (1099). The total fee is $1,600, to be disbursed as follows:

• $800 at beginning of the program
• $800 upon completion of the program
