    The Organization

    Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit serving Alameda County residents who are 60 years of age and older. LAS has held the Alameda County HICAP contract for 36 years. LAS provides individual counseling and community education to Medicare beneficiaries in the areas of Medicare, supplemental coverage including Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans, low-income assistance programs, and long-term care insurance. Through its Legal Services Program, LAS provides legal advice and information, representation in court and administrative hearings, referrals to other community resources, and community education and training in the following areas: prevention of elder abuse, consumer law, public benefits, housing, guardianships, naturalization, and health law.

    The Role

    The HICAP Volunteer Coordinator provides overall support to the HICAP program. They are responsible for volunteer coordination, supervision and training; oversight of the volunteer and client database; and coordination of the counseling sites throughout the county. The HICAP Volunteer Coordinator also provides individual client counseling as needed, occasional community education presentations, and assistance with outreach and publicity for HICAP and Legal Assistance for Seniors. This position attends and assists with bi-monthly HICAP counselor training sessions.

    Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Volunteer Coordination (50%)

    1. Create and implement volunteer recruitment and program strategies to expand volunteer service areas
    2. Train volunteers
    3. Support Volunteer Counselors
    4. Arrange the set-up and oversee the coordination of HICAP counseling sites and schedules
    5. Lead the planning of the annual appreciation luncheon for Agency volunteers

    Support the HICAP Program (35%)

    1. Take client calls and schedule appointments
    2. Provide client counseling either by phone or in-person as needed
    3. Help manage the HICAP database and run reports

    Education and Research (15%)

    1. Maintain a HICAP Counselor Certification and retain expertise in relevant topics
    2. Research and investigate emerging Medicare and related health insurance issues

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Experience in public interest or health care field
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Sensitivity towards and interest in working with seniors and people with disabilities
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Punctual and efficient with time use
    • Detail oriented and organized
    • Computer proficient, including Office 365, Outlook and Word

    Preferred:

    • BS/BA in a related field
    • Experience with public speaking and/or training preferred
    • Bilingual desired (Spanish preferred)

    Working conditions & physical requirements

    • Valid California driver’s license, a car, and appropriate insurance
    • Use of own vehicle for travel throughout Alameda County
    • Ability to sit for extended periods, use of phone and computer systems for long periods of time
    • Alternate between sitting and motion tasks frequently.
    • Extensive computer use
    • Hybrid work environment, some in office work required on a regular basis

    Compensación

    • Salary range of $30.32 - $33.02 hourly depending on experience
    • 35-hour work week
    • Four weeks of vacation and two weeks of sick leave per year, starting from the first day of hire.
    • Three personal days per year, available immediately
    • Generous paid holidays each year (13-15)
    • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life and AD&D insurance starting on the first day of employment. Dependent care coverage available at employee’s cost.
