Overview of Team

The Development Division at AJWS is responsible for raising the revenue that supports AJWS’s grantmaking and advocacy. The Development Division includes the following departments: Institutional Giving, Major Gifts and Planned Giving, Development Operations and Donor Engagement. Members of the Development Division partner closely with the Communications and Marketing, Programs, Finance and Administration and People and Culture teams, as well as the Executive Office and Board of Trustees, instilling a culture of philanthropy across the organization. The Development Division is responsible for cultivating, stewarding, and soliciting donors, and building a deep connection and commitment to our work for our supporters.

The Institutional Giving team in the Development Division is responsible for meeting annual institutional revenue goals and monitoring grants from professional foundations, governments, corporations and select family foundations.

Every team member of the Development Division contributes to achieving our annual fundraising goal.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, the Director of Institutional Giving (IG) serves as a member of the Development Leadership Team (DLT). The DLT works with the Vice President and Associate Vice President for Development to plan and implement integrated, cross-departmental divisional strategy and goals that align with organizational strategy. In collaboration with the VP and AVP, the DLT also develops and monitors fundraising revenue projections and the division’s expense budget. The Director of Institutional Giving (IG) leads a team of four (4) development professionals and the institutional giving function in AJWS’s development division. The Director is responsible for developing plans and establishing goals for the IG team that align with divisional goals. The Director monitors the IG departmental budget.

This position works closely with leadership across the organization.

Job Description

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Managing all components of AJWS’s institutional giving program;
• Developing, overseeing, and implementing strategies and goals for fundraising from foundations, governments, and other prospects for institutional grants;
• Stewarding a portfolio of institutional funders and prospects;
• Supervising and/or conducting ongoing research to identify new opportunities for support from foundations and other institutional funders;
• Collaborating with AJWS Board members, executive leadership, program staff, and development colleagues to cultivate and solicit institutional prospects;
• Overseeing the writing, preparation and submission of all grant proposals, letters of intent, reports, and other written materials for foundations, governments, and other institutional donors and, when needed, major donors as well;
• Liaising with program and evaluation divisions to digest and present programmatic work in a compelling fashion;
• Liaising with program and finance staff to develop budgets for fundable projects for institutional donors and to track restricted revenue and expenses to ensure institutional grant funds are spent on time and in accordance with the funder;
• Overseeing systems for prospecting, cultivation, deliverables, and institutional donor relationships;
• Managing two (2) full-time Institutional Giving Associate Directors.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree;
• Minimum of 7 years of successful institutional gift fundraising or related experience within complex and dynamic mission-driven non-profit organizations;
• Significant experience managing and motivating development professionals and maintaining strong relationships internally and externally;
• Superb writing skills;
• Track record of creating and implementing strategic fundraising initiatives, resulting in significant revenue growth;
• Demonstrated success securing grants from foundations;
• Demonstration of sophisticated, collaborative, and strategic approach to institutional fundraising and experience with face-to-face solicitations;
• Proven ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling, both verbally and in writing;
• Experience working effectively and respectfully with members of a senior leadership team, including the President as well as board members;
• Ability to travel nationally and internationally as needed; and
• Passion for and commitment to AJWS’s mission and values.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of fundraising for human rights or international causes;
• Understanding of the American Jewish community.

Additional Information:

• Salary Range: $112,000-$157,000
• This role is full time (40 HRS), Exempt
• This is not a union position

Location

Remote – Contiguous U.S.-Based

• This role is flexible in nature and can be performed from a home office in the contiguous United States.
